My Engine Swap in progress!

I moved the unions around, got the oil strainer and pan placed also helped the young one with homework!! Looks like I'll have to deal with the starter before I get the engine replaced... Tomorrow, oil cooler, mounts, ac bracket...

egg crate for hardware organization. That is brilliant. Never throwing away egg cartons ever again. I'm famous for the "one less screw going in than came out" and it drives me nuts. (pun)

Yeah...when I walk in to the local fastener supply store, it's like Norm walking into Cheers...everybody knows your name...

Pole climber, you got this pig back on the road yet

Not quite, with all this hot weather here, over the last week, I was required to make a trip to the garden shop! The lawn has grown 12" in the last week!!! My truck is now competing with the yard for my time and of course, it was Mothers Day--- luckily I have some teenagers to help--- if I can get them out of bed!!!! Anyways, my throttle body and plenum is at present, having a bath--- was it ever gummed up! Another indication the engine was worn....

Yup, me to! We have a chain parts store here called Lordco Auto Parts--- I get a discount as an employee of TELUS Communicatons Inc. so I buy almost everything there, except parts that are ridiculously expensive in Canada, then I buy USA online.....They know me on a first name basis..... So does the Toyota parts guy her in town....

getting there

This weekend I serviced the ALT, replaced all the wiring brackets, installed the power steering pump, AC, flex plate bolts (weird-- they're 9mm- 1.25mm-- extremely odd size) and installed the starter--- what a PITA! There's no bloody room-- I had to cut a piece of wood to rest on the frame and lever the starter in place to get the bolts in--- god help me, if I ever need to replace the thing! As I broke the tab on the plug, I used 2 zips to fix it in place-- worked like a charm. As soon as I get the plenum etc cleaned, I'll get the rest assembled....

Good to hear your still progressing though. I have my bad motor ready to be pulled out tomorrow evening.

Good lord. The drivers side rear engine mount bolt....I literally spent an hour and a half fighting that damned thing tonight.

Should be able to pull it tomorrow. Figure out the wiring mess, and "hopefully" install new motor and trans on thursday,

Looking good. Can't wait to see the finished product.

Thanks! Hopefully this weekend--- I'll see what my Wife has planned!!!

Drivers side is a pain, things are pretty tight... I found that a few of the tools I bought (cheap) made the work ALOT easier... I have all the traditional tools but the wobble sockets, racket wrenches and electric impact driver were in my hands all the time!!!

The engine leveler made placing the engine in the exact position, without manhandling it into place, easy as pie, the impact driver was perfect for removing the crank bolt-- 15sec---- exhaust, bell housing, oil cooler and unions. Wobble sockets, racket wrenches got me into all the tight spaces--- Toyota loves 10, 12, 14mm bolts and nuts! After all this, I like Toyota even more-- well engineered, well thought out and quite rugged. NOT like my Chev, more like my old, old chev!!

By the way, I used my egg cartons, took LOTS of pictures, and as I said above, bought a few tools to make my life easier! Being organized is half the battle--- good luck! Did you get the ECU wiring sorted out, with the tranny swap?

Yeah I've got the tranny part of It figured out. And I think I've got the transfer case figured. But that's un proven so far, so who knows.

Darn it! I'm ready to drop my replacement engine back in the truck but the sky opened up and the rain fell!! Hopefully, I'll get the time to do it tomorrow... Once I get the engine in, my next decision will be which throttle body to use. Some reseacrh will be required.

If anyone has done a JDM swap, I would be interested in the experiences as to whether anyone attempted to use the JDM equipment!

I have a jdm swap. Me and my buddie did it. Well mostly him lol. Anyways, I do not recommend using anything from JDM. For my swap, the oil pan was different, the oil filter location was different, the pullies were different, the timing belt cover was different, the intake had different stuff in it. We had to replace the fuel injectors. Jdm uses smaller injectors and was causing a miss fire after we dropped it in. Basically you NEED to really really look closely at things and compare them..jdm is right hand drive plus it could have been from a van or different car then just a 4runner. I used all my old pullies, my old whole timing belt kit, moved my filter into the proper place , used my old intake manifold, used my.old exhaust because the jdm was slightly bent at different angle , used old fuel old fuel injectors. Used old oil pan. Like I said LOOK VERY CLOSLEY!

Thanks for the feedback! I used pretty much everything from my old engine. At this point, I've almost re-assembled everything--- I'm now concerned because of what you've said about the fuel injectors, as I've left the JDM"s in. The best I was able to determine, the injectors were used in 2001 4Runners as well ... My engine came out of a Hiace van. I was unable to determine what the difference between my injectors (grey 23250-62030) are and these JDM's (orange 23250-62040)... I was thinking of giving them a try.... but now.... I haven't placed the plenum yet.... Were your JDM injectors orange? What vehicle was your engine from?

Update:
I found this forum thread: http://www.customtacos.com/forum/13...stion-3-4-5vz-fe-tacoma-4runner-tundra-2.html
and:

http://injector-rehab.com/shop/Flow_Rates.html
no. flow cc lbs/hr @bars R
23250-62030 240 23 2.25 14.3 Denso
23250-62040 246 23 2.25 14.9 Denso

It seems both injectors have a similar flow rate, resistance and spray pattern. I think I'll give them a try... unless anyone has first hand experiences with these specific part numbers?

I believe my engine was from a van. If something that had 2 wheel drive. By the looks the oil pan was shapped differently. It was not shaped for a front differential. If I rememeber correctly I think they were orange. But when we started the engine it was running like shit. Threw a code in few seconds. It wasn't for every cylinder but it was a misfire in like two cylinders. So we took the jdm injectors out and compared it to domestic. And clearly he jdm injectors have only 1 or 2 little holes for fuel. And the domestic has 4 holes. So upon replacing them we also replaced the tiny o rings on the injectors. And never had a problem ever since then. Runs like a champ :)! I believe the Japanese have strickt emmisions so maybe that's why they had only 2 holes for fuel to be injected.

It wouldnt hurt to check the Injectors and compare them. They might work they might not. For me it didn't. You sealed a whole motor lol how hard can it be check the injectors and replace o rings on them.

By the way, did you replace front and rear main seals ??

Thanks for your feedback! As yours, my JDM is from a van. And yes, the pan was completely different, and the oil filter/cooler arrangement was different etc. I think you've convinced me to change the injectors... as I haven't placed the plenum yet, and have unimpeded access. Yes I changed all the seals and gaskets, and WP/TB. I appreciate your quick response!

No problem bud. Because the reason I'm telling you to check your injectors and compare them is. My original motor blew a head gasket. It started with a misfire. It kinda went away after replacing the plugs. It was misfire in cylinder #3 , ofcourse cylinder #3 blew and that cylinder was filled with coolant to the top. It was bad. I was to worried to rebuild the motor and then end up with bottom end knocking. So I got a jdm. After we dropped the jdm, I was so happy until we started the motor up. It was misfiring. I was so disappointed and so angry thinking here we go again. Same shit same problem. My.mechanic buddy quickly was like it's the Injectors. It has to be. Shit you not they were different, as soon as we replaced them it ran like a champ. And even know he busted my balls about buying Toyota red coolant spending almost $100 for three gallons, I said I'd rather pay $100 now then $1500 again. After that I am beyond anal. Oil changes every 3000-4000 miles. Check my coolant constantly, check under the car for leaks constantly. Check the oil I check everything once a week. Because I want this car to last and I enjoy driving it. Plus, you might drop the motor in and if it is misfiring you might be looking in all the wrong places you know ?

Mine is 97, I don't know if the years had to do with different type of injectors being on the 5vzfe. But I think being that it's from across the globe it might lol.

I paid $1500 for jdm motor, the timing belt sticker says the belt was changed at around 58k miles. The jdm place said there engines have around 30k-60k miles on them. No more. How true is this ? Who knows. But I did get to go to their warehouse and pick out the motor out of like 10 they had. So I picked the cleanest. Another funny thing is the jdm motor has a sticker saying to replace the timing belt at every 100,000 kilometers, which is about 50-60k miles. But I'm sure every 90-100k miles is safe.

How much did you pay? I also got to keep a ac compressor, starter and couple other things of the jdm motor as those were basicallly the same but I didn't disconnect my ac compressor , I didn't want to refill it back lol.

When you moved the oil filter into the proper location, there was a round thing that was covering the other filter location, I don't know the proper name for it. Well , I though I could get away by re-using my old one, but I believe that it was to small or something, and also there's a little o-ring in that round cover, the domestic o-ring I had on mine didn't fit. I had to go to the dealer and order a specific o-ring for that cover.

Make sure it covers everything properly with proper o-ring. I believe there are two groves for two different type of o-rings. Just something to look out for.

We share the same experience. I ordered all the gaskets and o-rings and had it all waiting for me when I started the work. The only things I had to visit Toyota for were the cooler o-ring, gasket for the oil sump, and today-- the injector seals. I also visited the parts store for brushes for the ALT and contacts for the starter. I replaced the oil cooler lines. I bought the red$$$ coolant last weekend, also at the parts store. My tranny coolers went in last night.

As far as the price, I paid about the same as you plus shipping out West. I live a few hours Northeast of Seattle, just over the border. They told me that the engine had 65K km.... they also told me it was from a Hilux Surf, which it wasn't... so did they BS me about the mileage--- who knows? When I had the v covers and pan off, I had a good look around and observed very little wear and how clean it was... it still had oil in it and it was almost clear. So do I believe the mileage? no. But do I believe it has low KM's--yes.
My old engine had 250K km which it somewhat low for a catastrophic failure like mine had, but when I dropped the pan, I observed lots of metal and alot of sludge. A very good object lesson as to why you change the oil!! I have to thank the previous owner for that!

As far as the injectors are concerned, my old ones were installed in 4runners up to a manufacturing date of 07/1998, the ones from my JDM were used on all 4runners AFTER 07/1998. Are they the same spec--- no, but close. The thing is the ECU is tuned the that model injector, so considering all the work and some of the extra work I've done, I really don't want to chase my tail if they don't perform the same... I've got the top off, I might as well play it safe and not complicate my life anymore than I already have. I'll know tonight if the nozzles are different. Anyways, thanks for your response! I'll post my progress!

Sounds good bud. Let us know. Glad you changed the injectors. Like I said, it will save you headaches in long run incase you have a misfire. Good luck

You were on the money! I pulled the injectors last night and replaced them this morning and just as you said, the nozzles were totally different. You saved me a huge headache! At this point, I've used only the engine and no other peripheral components--- as you discovered. I plan on starting it tomorrow. I'll post how it goes! Thanks again!:clap2::clap2:

Happy for you :) just make sure every coolant clamp, tranny clamp and other things are nice and tight. Double check everything. Keep us updated.

She's running again!

Well, yesterday I got sidetracked, but I did get everything else placed. I had to make a run down to the parts store to return the upper rad hose, as the one they sold me last week, was too short. They didn't have a replacement, so I'm forced to use my old one, which isn't in bad shape.
I dropped the battery in but discovered that the battery was pretty much dead. I'm probably going to replace it, as I charged it when I removed from the truck at Christmas. I did note a fuel drip at the compression fitting--- gave it an eighth of a turn --- gone! So I set the battery to charge, and went to bed.
This morning, dropped the battery back in and the engine started on the 5th turn! Wow, is it ever quiet! idles like a big sewing machine, What a difference! not 100% happy however, I have some investigating to do---- its running a bit rough, shakes a bit at idle and shakes a bit on acceleration-- almost like its running on 5 cylinders.

Before I installed the injectors I measured them and the DC resistance were all between 14.0 and 14.4 ohms. I thoroughly cleaned the throttle body, MAF, installed new plugs (examined the old ones- all normal wear), new wires, PCV valve, TB (I was very careful to align the marks and I turned the crank multiple turns to ensure they continued to align) so I will have to go over everything again.:dammit: I've not had any codes. Overall, things went well over the entire job. I'm not overly concerned at this point, as it is much smoother than my old engine, even when I first bought it. I'm hopeful I'll identify this inconsistency quickly.... I'll check the timing tonight if I can find my timing light... hopefully not an injector, maybe a coil? I've already triple checked all connectors ie cam and crank pos sensors etc...... maybe an O2 sensor bad? I'm going to start investigating tonight. Any suggests are welcome!

Hopefully I'll be back on the road soon!!!!
