My Engine Swap in progress!

Yeah the tps but also the other one thats on there, the iac I think it is. Idle is definitely high, mine came in right at like 600 rpm.

Did your jdm come with a throttle body, maybe just try swapping the iac over from it.

I'm not sure what the part is called with the green connector.... but do you mean the whole assembly, bolted to the plenum or I could try swapping just the IAC (green connector??) (hopefully the seals are in servicable condition..)? I could try swapping the whole assembly but it is slightly different, in that it lacks the inside spring (no connection for cruise?) Worth a try. BigFishAllDay had a post in his build thread that mentions high idle, and when he changed the "throttle body" gasket, it fixed it and the idle was smoother. problem is, I remember that post and I did replace it--- with an aftermarket one, not oem....

Got the mis-fire issue!!!:whoo:
Its' smoooooth as silk! I'm a little embarrassed... A neighbor brought over his companies' Snap-on diag troubleshooter, this evening, and we were able to observe a whole bunch of variables. Clearly Cyl 4 was mis-firing only, and I'd swapped the coils. As I installed new plugs, I neglected to pull them after my problem appeared. Everything looked good except the misfire. So, with the intention of doing a compression test, I pulled the plug and immediately saw one electrode was almost touching the anode! I thought I'd checked all the gaps but I must of missed one!!! I'm going to take all of them out tonight and check them all again! If I missed one, I may have missed two... who knows... I can't remember---I installed them back in April.... However, I still have a high idle..... I'm going to swap out the TPS and IAC on spec.

How long has it been ran since being put in. Mine idled at like 1500 for probably 20 minutes to a half hour after assembly til the computer figured it all out.

I've had it running for maybe 10min since I found my mis-fire problem.... however, I just swapped the IAC and TPS tonight and I disconnected the battery....again. So, it's really only been running for a very short time.
Over the next couple of days I going to run it, paint the crash plate and replace all splash panels...I'll see if the idle drops--- I hope so!

awesome!

After about 30min of running, it settled down. It's now running great! Totally happy! Now I have a bunch of parts I have to decide what to do with....
I'll be pulling the boat this Sunday!! I'm happy the truck is now running great but, after spending over $2K just getting it back on the road, I fear it will be awhile before I'll be in a position to do anything else to it. About the only additional add-on I made during this swap was an additional tranny cooler. A single 70268 just didn't provide enough cooling in the Summer, towing my sportboat! The brake and rear suspension mods I want to do will have to wait, unfortunately....

Thanks everyone for there advice! I'll post a pic after I get it cleaned!

That's awesome man. Glad you were able to get it figured out.

Thanks.... now I get to do the stuff I use the truck for....

I'm a happy camper with my JDM!

It's been 2 weeks and I'm happy! Sewing machine smooth and idle sits at 650rpm. I've decided to replace the UBJ's and LBJ's to be on the safe side... Over the last week my son's Mazda stopped so I had to replace his ALT (I rebuilt it) and when I ordered my parts I ordered LBJ's for his and TB/WP for his and my other sons' cars... looks like I'm going to busy! When I'm not on the Lake! By the way, all the parts I ordered from the USA came in under $400... these purchased over the counter in Canada, would have been $1000 easy...

Blast!

Got stuck last night with my boat in the water and my truck with trailer dead! Just the dreaded "click" Battery was dead! This happened to me once before the swap but I figured I solved it as I changed the alt brushes---the original ones were worn out. I tied up the boat, ran home, grabbed some jumper cables, jumped it and was back home in no time-- good thing I wasn't farther afield! Anyways, I drove the truck around for a bit and parked---- wouldn't restart. ALT! I decided to drop the JDM alt in, as we have a holiday weekend of boating to enjoy! Works great now!

Still running great with the JDM ALT!

Well, after swapping my Alternator with the JDM, its still working great! I thought about changing the pulley, but the shaft on the Alt's are different sizes. Doesn't really matter as the belt fits fine. I'm just going to let it run!

Nice stuffs! I am currently replacing my engine but not with a JDM one. I need a little help. When unbolting the transmission from the engine, do I need to loosen up the tranny as if I was taking it apart? Or can it be done with the tranny intact (given i can reach the housing bolts). What about the crossbar? Do I remove it as well or no? Thanks in advance!

As per my response in thread 5vz-fe Removal thread.....
Leave the tranny, but I made a block that fit between the stablizer bar and tranny housing. With a jack(with plywood), I put a little pressure on the tranny and fitted the block and removed the jack (for working space!). This ensured the tranny stayed in position, making it easier to fit the replacement engine back in. Remove the access plate and remove the flex plate bolts (to torque converter) turning the engine with a breaker bar on the crank bolt(assuming you've removed the rad). I removed the starter at this point. To remove the bell housing bolts I used a wobble socket, recommended by singtoe in this write-up. I used several 1/2" extensions (as per my thread) and to get the top bolts you can reach up over the top of the housing--- believe it, there's lots of room! As I'm not a big guy with gorilla arms, I used a impact driver to get these bolts off. Check out: My Engine Swap in progress! entry #17.... I loosened the engine mount bolts before the transmission. when I was ready, that is everything removed and strapped out of the way, I attached the cherry picker , removed all bolts, put a little pressure on the engine, gave it a gentle shake and the engine gently separated from the transmission. I found that using an engine leveler on the cherry picker allowed me to lift and tilt the engine up, lifting the engine out. I had my son jack it up, while I maneuvered. worked like a charm! There is no need to mess with the tranny cross member or tranny mounts.

Inspiring

Great thread, great pics and love all the detail you've shared. Very inspiring !! I'm on a T4R project currently but will soon be diving head first into a 22re 94 2wd p'up i got on the cheap. Reading your thread makes me want to go get it tonight !!

I've worked on the 22re and theyre a durable and easy to work on engine. Unfortunately I've never owned one. Theyre just about the most durable truck on the planet!! Check this out:

Have fun with it!

Update...

It's running flawlessly and all I've needed to do is change the oil! I've put nearly 15K km on it since the swap ---- I was busy this last Summer pulling the boat to the lake and getting off the main roads, up in the mountains in and near Okanagan Valley, with no problems. We had a couple of feet of snow here, earlier in the month, and my truck performed brilliantly!
poleclimber63-albums-progress...-picture30736-cold.jpg

Here it is just before the snowstorm...

New stereo...

Bought a new JVC CD Receiver unit for my truck on Boxing Day to replace the aged cassette deck, which I plan on installing this weekend. Nothing fancy for <$100, but I must admit, I'm looking forward to it, as it has an AUX in, bluetooth, and is Sirrus ready. Here in the North Okanagan Valley we really have only 2 radio stations--- 4 total... so many people have satellite radio.... it will be nice to have some more choice...

I was thinking of replacing the antenna, as mine is starting to sound a little noisy... any suggestions?

Awesome!

Well, its been a year! And 14K Km without a hiccup! We just returned from a 1400KM weekend trip to Barkerville/Bowron Lakes and back and my 4Runner purrrred.

Over the next few weeks, I have a bunch of work to do on my 18' MAXUM bowrider sportboat. Water pump, seals, trim senders, all bellows and gimbal bearing. When that's out of the way, back to my 4Runner and I'm going to replace my rack guide and I'm going to start considering the Tundra brake upgrade. Not sure which calipers to use.... can't really afford to replace 2 SETS OF RIMS!!! This is my quandary...

Nice rig - I drove through the Okanagan and I think I'll end up retiring there at some point!

You and everyone from Alberta!!!! There are ALOT of retirees in this neck of the woods! I used to be an networking/repair tech here and it was nice to see the couples retiring here--- the guys always wanted to show you their Vette or Mustang in the garage, under a cover! It's amazing how many Vettes there are here in Vernon!! Cool cars and trucks, boats---- and golf carts!!! Unfortunately, I've got a long road to retirement!!

I used 1/4" spacers from Wheelers and the stock lug nuts. No problems in the 2000 miles since I did the upgrade.
