I also surf fish, and have been carrying my gear on the rear, waiting for...well you know....

I really am thinking of getting one of these. My only hesitation is that I have the front push bar from the group buy a few years back I bought on here. I do teach the Welding class @ the local HS so I think I could just make a angled up extension that I could use with two hitch pins. The increased amount of camping the family is doing really has me thinking about adding this hitch. Would work well too when going on the beach as well.

this might be a dumb question... but... is this just to supplement the back hitch? or is it just not convenient to carry the items you do on the front because it prohibits the use of the rear door if you carry them at the rear.

either way... the hitch looks great and seems like a fairly easy DIY to install them... thanks for sharing

Another good things about the front mount is that you can put in a tongue and use it to hold a strap so that you can get pulled out from front or back...

The advantage to having it up front is as you said, to be able to access the stuff without having to disconnect is as you do on the back. We take the dog to teh beach, and store our rods and gear in the back, having it on the front means easy access, and not having to remove it just to get the dog out.

has anybody tried shortening the brackets, (bringing the hitch up higher, then cutting a square hole for receiver thru the bumper? ive seen this done on grand cherokees before, but dont know if its possible with t4r. maybe a welder could fab up.

Sorry for the thread steal but I saw a jeep wrangler one time that had a grill to cook on on the front and a cooler and condiments table on the back. You should definitely should look into that if you like tailgaiting.

Hey TWFRAN great info on the front hitch especially with the pics. Real nice installation and I appreciate the ref to Hitchesonline who I will contact. My problem is that they redesigned the T4R for 2010 so parts are slow to come by, even from dealers. I'm sure the boys at HOL will have some ideas and you know they will understand what I'm talking about.

Reading some of the other threads the guys think we are a little crazy with front hitches and beach driving but hey, you have to go where the fish are and beach driving is definitely where its at, for as long as we are still allowed to do it. A front hitch can also be used for moving a boat around either in the driveway or at the launch ramp. Gotta love options.

Glad to hear about your new 4R! It took HOL a couple of years to get the front hitch package engineered for the 4th gen. I believe _JT_ has a friend or relative custom fab his front hitches. That may be the most expedient thing to do. Getting one made (or an angled arm) to move the basket out/up a bit would be a good upgrade for one like mine.
