My rear shock broke

So I just got home after several days up mt.hood, I did a quick walk around the runner and notice one of my rear shocks looking funky. It was off center.. Not aligned with the bolt. I could turn the shock by hand and move it. What could have caused this?

Is it completely sheared off? I don't see a bottom washer/retainer, which should have been installed?

My guess, no retaining washer means it's punched through the rubber and probably bent the top bolt a bit?

Agreed, It looks like someone forgot to install the most important part. LOL

BlackWorksInc - Bottom is sheard off, and washer was installed. Found the washer in the circle part of the frame...

How hard were you driving your truck? Looks to me like you got a faulty stem top on your shock from the manufacturer, unless you drive it like you stole it haha.

I don't think i drove hard. Drove through mostly snow covered stuff and maybe a donut in the parking lot. :P

My guess is you somehow compressed the rear suspension too much for the shock length. When you lift you need to extend the front and rear bumpstops so that you dont over compress beyond limit of the particular shock setup.

For example you can use:

43006-TTL - Rear Aluminum 2" Bump Stop Kit, 07+FJ - 03+4Runner - "ToyTec"

I frequent the Jeep forums because the my son has '98 Jeep Wrangler. On those forums, there is a big push that you need to modify the bump stops properly on every lift to ensure the compression does not go past the limit of the shock. And a whole bunch of jeepers forget to do that.

I have recently added these Toytec extended bumpstops to my 2010 FJ Cruiser in the rear, but still thinking through what to do with my front bumpstops. There seem to be a lot fewer options with FJs/4Runners, etc. than Jeeps and of course are pricier.

If the washer was installed then you either compressed the axle too hard/fast in that spot without proper bump stops and sheared it. Or you extended the axle too hard/too fast and the stud sheared/broke, typically on our J120/J150 suspensions the shocks end up being the limiting factor commonly (meaning when the suspension is at full droop the shocks tend to be what keep it from going lower, occasionally the panhard may assist in that but it's only because the shocks prevent lateral movement.)

Could be a defect in the shock or it could be from a sudden drop/compression.

It's perfectly fine for the shock to be the limiting factor for extension (down travel).
You never want the shock to be the limiting factor for compression (up travel). You need to lengthen your bumpstops!

Didn't mean to imply it was a bad thing, more that I've seen them break both on compression and on rapid overextension combined with a bit of sideways force. Most likely compression damage though. :)

Alright, looks like maybe I overextended or compressed the shock. I don't have extended bump stops, just the stock ones. But I really didn't do anything extreme; i'd consider it normal driving just add snow.

Looks like I'll be adding bumpstops when i get my shock replaced.

For my circumstance here in Canada I got a free replacement shock no questions asked. That was after over 6 months/12,000km's. Hope they do the same for you.

Could temperature have an affect on the bushings? It was pretty cold up there.

I'm not sure, there might be some experts that could chime in on that...but for me i had no idea what could of happened as I hadn't done much off roading to do any damage. As a female I was prepared to be at the mercy of the dealer/installer but was happy to get the free replacement as they explained it was a Toytec defect.

Example : Aftermarket product inproperly installed

I doubt temp had anything to do with this.

Normally, you don't need to extend your bump stops with a 5th gen standard suspension lift. The shocks should have a compressed length similar to stock.... and therefore hit the bump stops before bottoming out the shock.

If you are running an LT style shock... then you need bump stop extensions, since those shocks will typically sacrifice up travel for more down.

If Toyotec sold you shocks that need bump stop extensions without a warning... then it seem like their fault.

Bought the Boss Lift Kit back in Nov 14', It did not include bump stop extensions.
