I recently picked up a portable 12v compressor for use in the 4runner. after a LOT of research, I landed on the Smittybuilt 2781.
info here:
Air Compressors - Smittybilt
I got mine on amazon, I found a quick few hour sale, and got it for $131 shipped.
normal price is $150.
Amazon.com: Smittybilt 2781 5.65 CFM Universal Air Compressor: Automotive
last year, these things were selling for $25 on amazon. not sure if it was a glitch, a typo or what, but a bunch of people got them for $25. I wish I had found that deal.
Smittybilt 2781 5.65 CFM Universal Air Compressor for $25 on Amazon
I found several threads on a couple different sites talking about the $25 deal, it happened..
I finally got a chance to use it this last weekend. I have to say, for a portable compressor it works VERY well. not overly loud, and puts out a LOT of air. if I had to guess, I would say the 5.6cfm they advertise is correct.
the only thing I didn't care for, and am changing is the way it attaches to the valve stem. its a little screw on head. it screwed on easy enough, and sealed well. I just prefer a quicker style. im going to replace it with a euro style air chuck.
something like this.
be aware when ordering this type of air chuck, as they offer open, and closed. for my compressor, without a tank, I want the OPEN. so its always putting out air. if I were running an air tank, I would want the closed style, they only let out air when clipped to a valve stem.
also, the air hose that comes with this compressor is awesome. its a yellow coiled hose that im sure most of you are familiar with.
except this is more rubber than plastic. its not so stiff, and doesn't retract like a spring. so its not yanking on the valve stem.
all in all, it seems to be a quality unit.
for anyone on the fence, or looking for a portable compressor, I highly recommend this one. they also make a less expensive, lower output model, the 2780. but the 2781 is definitely worth the extra money.
