My Undercarriage Clean Up (Pics)

I wanted to share with you guys what I've done over the summer to my 4Runner after buying it off my mom, the original owner. My 4Runner has spent its whole life in NJ, with about 10 years being garaged kept. Overall in great shape including the body. I absolutely hate rust so I decided to prolong the life of my 4runner by getting rid of all the surface rust.

And yes, I'm jealous of all you southern and west coast guys. I'll be out there one day.

Let's begin. First pictures of the frame beginning my project. No rot, just surface rust.




Next, wire wheeled all the loose rust




Coat of primer. Starts looking good now.

After primer, 3 coats of paint. Rustoleum flat black. I did not need to spray the whole frame because it was still black and clean.






And finally, sprayed everything with used diesel oil. Extra shiny, extra black, and extra protective from these winters.




To me, it was well worth as I plan to drive this 4Runner for many years. It is definitely a piece of mind also. Thanks for looking!

I like the layer of diesel. I used to spray a mixture of gear oil and penetrating oil. It makes a thick layer and after that, the surface is good for years.
Before you apply oil make sure the frame is free from water.

Exactly. The layer of oil usually lasts me 2 years before I have to do it again. If you spray water on my frame it just beads up so you know the oil is doing its job.

So how did you spay on the diesel? Mine has no rust, but I want to coat it to protect is from rust this winter when I ski, if my body will give me one year of skiing.

What did you use to scrape the surface rust off? Or did you walnut blast it? Also, how long did it take? I need to do the same but am considering taking it to a shop.

Mine came from Indianapolis, I think it was there from '99 to '14. Looked similar to yours and cleaned up pretty well so far. I did not spray the oil, not necessary down here. But while I was under neath I would remove nuts and bolts, put a little anti-sieze on, and re-install. That will be helpful in the years to come.

This is everything needed to spray the oil. Got the spray gun from Lowes. I sprayed used 15w-40 motor oil that came out of my previous diesel truck. It's thick and black.

I simply used a cordless drill and put a wire wheel on the end of it. It did a good job.

I found this stuff and the kit, check out their website. I think its the stuff to go with and you might want to consider it.

It seems to be an amazing system. I have no rust on mine and I think this might be the way to protect my truck for years to come. I particularly like the fact that you can do the inside of the doors, body parts and frame.

I've heard good things about fluid film also.

Just can't beat the price of free when doing it my way. And it leaves everything looking black as well.
