Hey guy's,

I recorded this video in my attempt to trouble shoot the removal of my aftermarket alarm (related to my other thread )

This is the dash/relay/ecu noise I was talking about.

Can anyone tell me what's making this noise! (Its only when the doors are shut)

There was a aftermarket alarm sys that was found in 97 2wd base models tacoma's that had this sound in them, it was a factory option but it was by aftermarket company that had to be ordered extra and the dealer installed. The sound is basically a timer letting the drive know he had 60 seconds to insert key(which if u didn't the horn sounded) and start the vehicle and what u are hearing is the actual timer part it consisted up 3 pieces the timer the ecm and the key switch sensor they are rare but from time to time pop up. Most of the time the ecm failed and caused a no start but I have never heard or seen one in a 4 runner interesting.

Well this makes a lot of sense now thanks for the reply. My guess its tied into the aftermarket alarm. I did some searching and like you said there was a couple cases of this on the tacoma. Currently I am in the process of removing the alarm, so this will be next if it can be removed cause as it stands if I don't want to hear the ticking... so when I enter the truck and press the black little valet switch it turns off (the alarm doesn't go off because I cut the siren:ohwell:)

Do you happen to know if this unit can be simply removed with the alarm system?

Yea I mean its only 3 components and thats it. mostly under the steering wheel area. Its a crap setup if u ask me cause who wants to rush to turn the key in the ignition. The timer should be located behind the stereo and ecm near the key switch area its been so long and the applications vary because it depended on the tech and where he placed each component. Now in 96-97 camry it was a similar setup but the theft system was made by viper and it was all one big black box under the steering column.

Ok that seems simple enough thanks! The last day or so I have been putting my ear to the dash to pinpoint that stupid timer but never did find it :redbrick:. I'll have some time on Thursday to take apart the dash and hopefully find that thing.

I agree sounds like a bad design, I knew nothing about it till today but it does not sound very useful. Ideally I'm going to take out that and the aftermarket alarm and enjoy the peace and quiet haha

Bit of an update,

The rare alarm countdown module whatever you want to call it was the issue as mentioned. Not much detail on it as I had it removed when I got my remote starter put in last week.
