NateMob's "DD" Build

Have you thought about plasti-dipping them black? I figured it would definitely be a more flexible coating than spray paint? Not sure how well that would hold up, but I was planning to do that on my rear Sway-A-Way coils because they are bright red, but then I got lazy, lol.

I didn't think of that, it would have worked great for that i bet. Yeah, these are on now, no way in hell i will be pulling them just to change the color. It was a workout fitting these on the extended travel coilover, I dont think it would have been possible on a standard travel setup.

I like the blue! Keep it!

Its staying for sure, the blue has really grown on me. :hat:

Got my coilovers rebuilt last weekend, everything is nice and tight on them now and the new springs feel nice paired with the heavier spring weight of the 861s out back. Not sure i explained my reasoning for swapping front coils in here yet. At stock weight close to it the factory Icon coil was great, it is a 13" 650lb coil. I was able to preload them to get the amount of lift i desired without any issue, after adding full skids, sliders, and a putting a heavy rear bumper/carrier on the coils were pretty much maxed out. I had already put the maximum recommended preload on both front coilovers per Icon's tech team. Once the new front bumper and winch came it was just too much weight for the front end to contend with. I noticed more and more i was hitting my front bumpstops while wheelin and even after dialing in a couple more turns of preload to try and get my stance back the coilovers simply would not lift the front end anymore.

The idea of fitting a 14" 700lb coil onto an E.T. Coilover popped up in crazydubman 's thread a couple months back as he was talking about the option as a way to simply move the adjustment collar up enough to adjust them without the need for unbolting the UCA from the spindle. TraumaHawk chimed in and said that it could be done and that he ran the setup. Sold! I knew what needed to be done. I ended up with King coils and the ride is pretty close to what i had before with the cranked down 650s, the fact that i have less than 1 1/2" preload on either side now, has to contribute to the way these dont really feel like a heavier duty coil. And i was able to get my front end up a touch to help with the rake i had going on since putting the 861s in. No doubt i still have rake but the front is now at 38 1/2" ground to flare and the rear is at 40" ground to flare. Thats with my usual tools and such in the back. Im okay with that, once i go up a size or two in tires I think i will be even more happy with the stance of everything.

Toyotacolin and i did an easy little desert mountain trail last night, the trail could have been done in 2wd and some momentum but the reward was at the top looking out over the Tularosa Basin and the Sonoran Desert.

4runner is looking great nate. My reasoning for wanting the 14" coils up front was simply to move the adjustment collar up enough to adjust them without the need for unbolting the UCA from the spindle. The uni ball would land smack in the middle of the adjustment range with where I wanted the height. It wasn't so much for the height needed as the ability to adjust the height easier without unboltijg the UCA. Still, with the extra weight I'm glad the extra inch on the coil and slightly stiffer rate is working out for you.

I don't remember if you mentioned it, but did you rebuild the Icon's yourself? If so, what rebuild kit did you use? I really need to do mine and plan on getting the Icon kit through Metaltech since they are having a 20% sale. Any tips or suggestions? Also did you have to use a wall mounted compressor for the 14" coils? I might try to bump up to a 14x650 or 14x600. I have no weight up front besides the budbuilt so I think 600's would be good, but 650 would cover any bumper that may come about.

The 4runner is looking great btw and what are you doing for tire now that you sold the 35's?

Gotcha, i remember that now. Sorry for speaking for you, incorrectly at that! What do your caster #s look like with the Camburg arms? I just swapped out my Light Racing arms for some uniball Icons and was wondering what others with uniball uppers were able to get to for caster and camber. Thanks for the compliment and I hope you have your shock situation worked out soon. .

I think i am too late now to answer these and i think we covered it all in our PMs. For everyone else, no i dont have access to a wall mounted compressor, it would have made the coil spring swap a ton easier and safer. I used the chintzy compressors that you rent from Autozone and just kept praying they didnt explode and send shrapnel through my skull. I was seriously scared.

Still cant decide on a tire or even a size. :cry2: I have my Konigs up for sale as i want to go back down to a 16" rim. Tires are significantly cheaper and the selection just blows the 17" choices away. I have some significant changes coming soon. Just waiting on delivery of a few items.

Damn you Nate... I need a CBI Hybrid now.

Heard you ordered one, when are you taking delivery? Your truck is coming along very nicely.

I dont think i ever posted this here, it's the final cut of our Thrill on the Hill event this past September. Watch the video, and I'll see you next year!:driving:

yeah. Well, Nathan over at CBI actually brought it down to me today. He had a meeting down here, emailed me and offered to bring it, his meeting ended up being 5 minutes from my house. The bumper is currently sitting my garage. I'm debating hitting it with a rattle can or powder coating it.

That's really cool that he brought it down to you. Lucky you, saving a ton on shipping. I have both front and rear bumpers powdercoated. I honestly just think the rear should be powdercoated, rickashay told me earlier in the year about rattle canning his rear hybrid on the Duster and how after less than a year it was looking pretty sad. From miles of gravel roads and trails he said the inner portion (the parts facing the undercarriage), the paint had been sand blasted. Looking rusty and not sexy. The parts you would see just walking around the truck still looked good but the rest needed repainting badly.

I dont really see the front seeing that kind of constant assault from sand and pebbles so i would save the money and paint the front. My next front bumper will be rattlecanned more than likely. The blems on my front bumper are from large rocks and boulders on the trail, now needing to be touched up, and ill have to go paint over powdercoat to stop the rust.

I recently decided to finish up the freshening of my front suspension with a new set of UCAs. Taking advantage of a smoking black friday deal i picked up some Icon Uniball UCAs without much hesitation. I didnt have a great reason for replacing the Light Racing adjustable UCAs that i have been running for the past 10 months. But, I did want something that I could essentially remove and re-install over and over if need be without totally wrecking my alignment. The past few months i had come to see the adjustability of the LR arms as more of a curse than a blessing. And i knew the mounting bushings were on their way out. So i was going to have to pull them to fix them anyway. I had an earlier rubber bushing design that has since been updated to a more modern and durable Poly setup.

The hardest part about the swap was getting the old upper ball joint adaptor out, the Icon install was easy as pie. If anyone has questions about either let me know. I also love the new uniball caps that Icon came out with, i think sealing off the top will lengthen service life of the uniball greatly.

Light Racing is replacing my old arms with a new set with the updated bushing design, once i have them back they will be for sale.

Hey Nate. Just getting caught up on this thread.

Those night pictures are pretty awesome. Did the photographer use HDR software to make it come out like that?

You mentioned replacing the front UCAs, did the Light Racing ones go bad? Im wondering why they are giving you a free set.

I'm still stock but I've thought about replacing them some time before 250k miles.

No I did not use HDR on that, not much processing was needed really, thats one reason I love night shots. Thanks for liking them. :)

What are the pros to the Uniball itself. I need UCA's for my ext travel icons i have waiting to be installed. If you sell me on them, i'll get those. If I still want the LR, i'll buy your's when you get them back!

But for now can you go into more detail on the icon UCA's?

Yeah i'm super glad he brought it down. Great customer service. Will definitely work with them again.
That kind of what I was thinking. I know i'm rattle canning my sliders, i'll see how that turns out. If I can do that well enough, i'll do my front bumper as well. The back is definitely getting powdercoated. Thanks for the info!

I'm jelly of that front suspension.

I'm jelly of your SC, i want one of those bad boys. I need one now. :hungry:

Always great to have you stop by here Brian, your a wealth of knowledge around here! Yes, the rubber bushings in my LR arms blew out in the 10k miles that i ran them, it was an old style rubber design that has since been replaced by a new and improved poly setup that they are implementing on all of their arms now.

For me, down here in the southwest where wet weather is pretty scarce and i dont usually let my truck stay dirty after wheeling, the sealed ball joint of the LR arm wasn't that great of an advantage over uniball designs that are offered. I just made the switch to go with something that was a solid bulletproof design made by a company that i know and trust. Less wear items on the Icon arms as opposed to the LRs and i wanted the simplicity. I can deal with replacing uniballs every couple of years as they wear out and develop slop, i just dont like the idea of a failure on the trail or highway from a ball joint seperation or worse that has happened to a handful of LR arms in various applications.

All my armor is about to be rattlecanned black. Ready for a change and with my new wheels it would just be too busy and patchworked to keep the silver theme going.

Been busy making some big decisions in my truck's life lately, tweaking setups and fixing problems til i have everything dialed just the way i want things. Maintenance was needed first however. Within the last month i did a full synthetic oil change complete with oem oil filter. Also replaced the air filter with another OEM Toyota filter, i was surprised to see it was made in the USA. :usa2:

Next, I replaced what i believe were the original plug wires with a NGK TE66 kit along with some fresh dual electrode NGK BKR5EKB-11 plugs. The 5 of the 6 plugs i pulled were duals, 1 was a single oddly enough. I didnt think they were that bad until i compared them to the new plugs and i saw how wore away the old electrodes were. I cant really tell if the truck runs any different since the updates but i know it cant hurt!

Hey guy:hello: How much you thinking you want to let those LR UCAs go for?

Unless Nate has another set I bought the new replacement ones he got back under warranty from the manufacturer a few weeks ago. Just waiting with my parts pile to go on my front end. Sorry brother.

Installed my 4Runner's 5th set of rear springs, and hopefully its last. I was happy with the 861s weight carrying ability along with the on and off road ride. They were just a little tall and were giving me a larger rake than i like. Even with all the extra weight i carry, i think if i had a full set of cargo drawers or a heavy audio system they would have worked out better. So out came the 861s and no bumpstop cones and in went some Lexus 8.25 and 8.75 wrap coils. With the bumpstop cones installed to keep metal on metal contact/sounds down. No pictures of them side x side but the Lexus coils were every bit as tall on my work table as the 861s were, no worries about them falling out under full droop. The ride is similar, i think the spring rate may be a touch lighter though because they do seem to absorb hits better, not floaty or too soft however, and they support the ass weight well.

Installed a 1/2" body lift in anticipation of some new shoes that were on the way. The gaps leftover from the mod, are minor and will be easy to live with, I owe you all some better photos of everything soon.

How'd that tire get so dirty back there?

Untitled by natemob7, on Flickr

It was my driver front and a rock ripped a hole in it! Luckily i always carry a fullsize spare and i had it swapped out in 15 minutes or so and the fun continued. :lookout: The gash was in a very thick part of the carcass down near the bead, must have hit it just right. I was aired down to 18lbs went it went.

Be prepared for some serious trimming/cutting/patching/welding on the firewall/pinchweld area if you go with these. They are badass though.

Can we get a thorough update on this GD build thread already? What did you do for tires? 305/75's? What's the status on the Addicted bumper? Why get rid of the CBI?

So. many. questions.

PS, considering our plans for a fall run didn't materialize, check this out:
