You two crack me up, Yall both have awesome black trucks! I would hate black paint out here in the desert though, it would always look filthy. Not to mention the desert pinstriping that would show up and stand out.
I have always like the Hankooks for some reason and couldn't find many negative or disappointing reviews on them. Everyone that i could find that wheeled them, loves them, and gets decent mileage out of them. Nice sidewall tread and a tough, thick, 3-ply sidewall that was a good bit thicker than my BFGs. Load Range D so i dont have to worry about being beaten to death on the roads when i run 35-40 psi. Decent weight at 64lbs a tire for a 295/75/16, these off the truck are every bit of Hankook's claim of them being 33.6" tall. These tires are freakin' beefy, tall, and wide. The wide, flat, and squared off profile gives them a nice stance and contact patch with the road. I got a smokin' deal on them. 5 mounted, lifetime balanced, taxed, and including replacement certificates for less than $1200. And this tire test that has them ranked King of the Hill.

Okay, i have been putting off posting about any of this til its all finished and painted but ill update once its all in and on.
I have been looking at and wanting new tires for some time now, I just never could decide on and commit to a tire design and size that i was really into. All the while looking only at 17s, i would occasional peruse the 16" offerings but had no intention of buying new rims. My Tundra wheels with 1" spacers were the perfect width to not rub in the front when stuffed and turning, they were beat up from lots of rocks and i didn't have to worry about ruining them since they were already "broken in". This went on for several months.
I have been keeping up with [MENTION=63060]rickashay[/MENTION] 's Tom Cruiser build and have always liked the look of his Limited Edition, Matte Grey, Deep Dish 3.5" backspacing, SCS F5s, man they look incredible on his truck. I checked them out around the start of December, and got in touch with Vin. A few emails later i pulled the trigger on 5 in the same flavor as Addison with black spline lug nuts. I did have Vin add the black SCS logo to the rims to help tie everything together. What an exceptionally entrepreneur and enthusiast, I couldn't have asked for a better buying experience and can't remember making a purchase where i was kept so informed on my order. They arrived in pristine condition with a couple decals and a hand written "Thank You" from Vin himself. They are insanely light at only 18.4lbs each, my old 17"s were 27lbs apiece. Nice weight savings that will help negate the increase in tire weight.

For tires i went with a load range D 295/75/16 Hankook Dynapro MT. The manufacturer lists them as 33.6" tall instead of the 33.4" that the metric size converts to. So they run big for their size. Yay. The sidewall has a nice look to it that goes well with the tread. And the tread, looking like it was chiseled and carved as opposed to molded, nice crisp edges and anti-pebble bars between the lugs. The rubber compound does seem a little soft, i wonder where the tradeoff will be between traction and treadwear. 64lbs each.
My old tire and wheel combo was close to 76lbs.
Tundra 17" 27lbs
BFG MT KM1 255/75/17 49lbs
New setup is close to 82lbs.
SCS F5 16" 18.4lbs
Hankook Dynapro MT 295/75/16 64lbs
Once mounted i was a little worried, they rubbed. A lot. I had previously hammered back my pinchweld for clearance, i needed quite a bit more. I took about 1/2" off the front of my sliders then welded in a 1/8" disc that fit the tube ID perfectly. I went pretty much by-the-book using [MENTION=67615]Dirtco[/MENTION] 's method for running 35s with lots o backspacing. I still need to gut the inside of the fender flare a bit more because they rub while turning and stuffing a tire. Happy to report they fit the rear perfectly with my shock and bumpstop setup. They make contact with the smooth slope of my rear bumper at the same point that they ever so slightly touch the inner lip of the rear fender. All as the bumpstop compresses 3/4" and the shock is 1/8" from bottoming out. Its close, i will probably lengthen my bumpstop setup a little just for peace of mine. Not worried at all about the bumper rub, but i do intend to trim the inner fender ever so slightly.
Can't see much after painting it black but it is all nice and smooth if it does still rub.

I am/was not happy with the silver and Thundercloud motif i have my truck painted in so i will be painting the sliders and bumpers black next, I think it will make the wheels POP! and tie the black accents on the wheels into the rest of the truck.
I actually haven't had the chance to download and read the article about my truck yet, its pretty exciting that its in there though! Hopefully i can get an updated photo in there sometime this year. infamy won't change me! lol

Before i even attempted to put on the new wheels and tires i did a 1/2" body lift from @emeliaenkov , nice quality kit that is a simple 2-3 beer job. Only took me about 3 hours to knock out, including tearing apart and reassembling the interior. The photos from my previous post show the gap around the bumpers and sliders. Not too bad if you ask me. It helps that i notched my pinchweld under the doors when i originally had my sliders welded on, so they were about 1/2" higher than most to begin with.
I have been fairly happy with my CBI Hybrid front bumper (more than happy with the rear). The design is different, and i like that. I dont however, think it was designed with quite an offroad-centric mindset that i tend to have. The approach angle is better than the stock bumper but not what i hoped it would be once i got it out on the trails. I still found myself getting hungup a decent amount on the low and forward hanging shackle mounts and the fact that it mounts to the factory thin bumper ends doesn't inspire much confidence under heavy winching. I was personally worried it was going to peel off. The ground clearance under the front could be better as well, a "high-clearance" of the bumper would be ideal.
Enter Addicted Offroad's new plate bumper. Although they call it a plate style bumper i think it is just as much a "hybrid" style as my CBI. Plate and tube, combined to create strength and keep the weight down without exposing your dirty undercarriage. I talked to Scotty and like what he had to say about the design and the ideas behind the bumper, straight shooter, no BS. Originally it was supposed to ship the weekend before Christmas, being a completely new product AOR wanted to make sure the first couple that went out mounted without issue, pushing the rest of the production run back a couple weeks. Ill wait a little longer for a bumper that fits as advertised and expected, but i still hate waiting. I'm ready for it now!:hungry:
Today i went ahead and pulled the CBI so i can get it cleaned and up for sale. I knew with the small gaps produced by the BL i wanted to paint anything below the fender line to help blend body into bumper. I painted the underpinnings a satin black and plan to do the bumpers in gloss black, i already sprayed the sliders and am very happy with how they look and contrast with the truck.
All taped and drying after a first coat.

Wowza! We got some serious updates going on here! Props man, not only is it so "sexy & flexy" that's one hell of a 4Runner you've built & glad to see you enjoy on it the trails too.

Nate, like I mentioned there on flickr - that new WIDE stance looks deadly. I was wondering how much you had to trim upfront. Looks like a little bit of work but worth it from looks alone. Not to mention the added width is always nice for stability. I was really digging that CBI upfront but if its functionality isn't up to par, then I can see why your swapping it out. I think it's going to look great with the new bumper and all the black trimmings. Awesome job man, and congrats on the mag. article.

Looks sick man. Glad to finally see you post up about everything that was going on. I love how the 295s line up just perfect with the limited fender flares. One more thing you could try and do is to get the front tires off the firewall is to get an alignment with the caster pushed as far forward in spec as possible. This is one thing I have yet to try, and you would probably have better results since you have the aftermarket UCAs. Looking great as always. Can't wait to see the Addicted all mounted up. I think the switch to black will give it an even better look.

Man, there was a lot to digest in those couple of posts. I'm surpised to see that you're going back to black on all the accessories, but I can't blame you (see my rig). The situation reminds me of the "grass is always greener" saying because I look at your rig and I usually start imagining what my bumpers would look like color matched. Yours will look sharp, esp. with the lighter wheels, which look great BTW.
My one complaint about the SCS wheels was always the backspacing, at 4.5" on most of their offerings. I'm a huge fan of 4" BS, because it works so beautifully, but 3.5" is something I'd consider, putting them in the mix if I ever decide to change it up.
Nice work on the clearancing job, and THANK YOU for taking some pics of the 1/2" body lift. That guy has sold a ton of those things and there are zero decent pictures of the results prior to the ones you posted. I know I kind of spurred your purchase with my post about the CBI rear, and now your post has now spurred me in the same direction. I'll send you a PM with a few more questions.
RE the CBI front, I understand what you mean about the clearance issues. My ARB has some similar shortcomings. The rocks completely removed the powder coat on the leading edges of the shackle mounts while I was in Moab. It forces me to begin steep obstacles at a slight diagonal angle sometimes. I think it's a wise spot to place them from a strength perspective because they are right in line with the frame, but if that keeps you from taking the right line it just increases the likelihood you'll have to actually use them to make a recovery. I agree with you, it's just better to have the clearance.

I'm digging the decision to paint the armor black and and look forward to seeing the final product of Scotty's tube plate hybrid. He does put out some great products. Hence my decision on armor for a couple of my rigs now.
I have been contemplating the decision on whether I will need to look at a 1/2" body lift "IF" I ever decide to go with 35's. Although, I will still have to modify quite a bit more if I go that route. Its good to see how it looks and the gap it creates with the bumpers. Is Scotty building the new front with a 1/2" built in?
