NateMob's "DD" Build

Looks fun!

We had a really good time, wish you could have made it. Next time!

Sweet build! I really like the custom extended bump stop mount, would you happen to have some more 2X2 so you can make me some? :bigok:

PM coming your way. I think i can make that happen:yo:

Nice updates.

I really like the rear link skids, but does anyone know what the slots around the bolt holes are for? Do they provide some sort of stress relief?

The skid has to be larger to be able to fit over the mount, but because of that the skid doesnt fit as tight as it could, so those slits enable the part of the skid around the bolt hold to bend in a little bit and cinch down on the mount so the skid is nice and tight and doesnt rattle.

Thanks BR, Jim answered your question perfectly. I wasn't sold on the concept until i installed them, but, the design is really cool.

Back on President's Day (Feb. 18) i took the plunge and ordered up a new rear bumper for my truck, specs were to be:

CBI Offroad Fabrication Hybrid Bumper
Centered Tire Carrier
No Jerry Cans
Built-in Hi-Lift Mount
rickashay 's Lower Tube Tweak
Powdercoated Dark Silver

I was originally quoted about a month wait for my bumper, i took delivery of it on Monday (April 1) exactly 6 weeks later. Some things are just worth the wait! :bigok:

The color and finish looks awesome and i don't think i could have gotten a closer match to my sliders and skids. I know others have had worries and concerns with the Hybrid's tire carrier design. Even with my fullsize spare hanging there, i get ZERO slop and sag with my swingout. I know I'm not hanging a 35 off of it but but i am impressed with the design. Install went pretty smooth and i was lucky to have a buddy helping. Definitely not a one man job. Anyone with any questions please let me know.

Naked!

I am pleasantly surprised with how the rear 890 coils are holding up the weight. The ride is very calm and settled with the extra weight back there, it also go rid of the annoying rake i had before. Im very happy with how my truck is riding, driving and coming along.

I want a swing-out.......:cry2:

Hahah looks awesome man!! Love the color too, nice to see something other than black. The center-mounted tire looks great as well.

Very nice! I am jealous...shouldn't be much longer before I order mine

Couple questons...

What was your wait time?
Did CBI get it powder coated for you?

Love the look of that bumper with the centered triangular swing arm. Looks great! I couldn't be happier with CBI's products. Did you have to do any kind of shimming to get it lined up correctly? With the exception of widening a couple holes on my frame, mine bolted right up and centered perfectly. Honestly, I was impressed.

Now ya need a front bumper.... :D

Hell yea man! Looks so sick. I love the color on the bumper and the sliders too. Maybe its just me but I love the hybrids more than the plate style :noidea:. By the way what is this lower tube tweak you speak of?

Thanks dude, i appreciate you letting me pick your brain before i pulled the trigger! I am very happy with the center mount.

thanks Dous, I waited exactly six weeks for delivery of mine, that included a couple custom bends and powdercoat from them.

Ummm, I'm not seeing any cake in this picture...
Thanks a lot boss! I think i am the first 3rd gen to rock a Hybrid with the centered swing out and no frills added. Mine is centered perfectly but the driverside is about an 1/8" lower, not enough to mess with honestly. It went on so smooth i didnt dare loosen anything to tweak it! And yes i do need a front bumper, this one probably wont last much longer. :thumb3:

Thanks man, I appreciate the advice prior to me ordering. I am a fan of both Plate and Hybrid style CBI bumpers but i too, like the Hybrid style more for its unique look and weight savings. rickashay originated the "tweak" by having CBI start the bottom bar bends as inboard as possible to have more clearance outboard of the frame. Its a slight change but one that will keep you from hooking the bottom tube on ledges and such. The difference can really be seen here side by side.

Looks great!

One of the nicer 4R's for sure.
Very kind words sir, they are greatly appreciated. Thanks for checking out my build!

Man I am so jealous of the CBI, those things are so sweet! I can't wait until I can afford one...

Thanks a lot Jimmy, I am pretty jealous of your new Shrockworks. Hows the install going?

Hmmm. I kinda thought that your tube bends looked more angular than mine but I just thought it was because mine are black and kinda blend in. I haven't hooked mine yet and hopefully never will but I can see where that little change could make all the difference.

Oh and its time to loose that exhaust tip man:flamethrwoer2:

No problem man! The install could be going better...I made the mistake of trying to tackle it myself and I quickly realized that I just don't have the right tools, so I'm probably going to just have it professionally installed.

I've never compared the "factory" CBI Hybrid to the "adjusted" one before. Yah, it actually looks more different than I even thought now, seeing them side-by-side. I'm glad I made the small, but subtle change. I've already landed on those corners a ton of times and I've dragged that edge pretty hard a couple time. I think with the factory design I still would have been fine, but they might have hung me up and required a recovery instead of scraping through.

Glad I could help and I'm also glad your liking the minor "tweak" of the lower tubes. Looks great!

LMAO @ how the cake picture came up again! :tongue1:

Congrats on getting the rear bumper all worked out and installed. I'd have to agree that the color is pretty cool on your rig, and definitely something other than what we're all used to seeing.

Nice updates lately man. You're making fast progress on this 4Runner.

haha yeah, I showed my wife, she got a kick out of it! I was nervous about too much silver but as great as black bumpers look on silver, i wanted something different. I would kill to be headed to Moab with the T.A.CO. group, maybe next year.

I think CBI needs to add it as the "Rickashay Option", looks better and more functional. whats next for your awesome truck?

I slid down the full length of the side wing this past weekend and was thankful of the smooth transition, it surely would have hung up on me. I also got the exhaust trimmed up finally! Thanks for calling me out on it!

Big ass update.

A few weeks ago i ripped an inner cv boot on my right passenger cv, i priced out reboot kits and replacements and thought that to bypass all the trouble of rebooting the stockers that some Duralast Gold axles from AutoZone with a lifetime warranty sounded great! The price was only different by about $8.

Looks good right?

I proceeded to swap both sides out on a saturday before a wheelin' trip the next sunday. Everything went pretty smooth with the R&R of both sides. WELLLLL, the passenger side lasted less than 24 hours! I had already made several difficult and technical lines before the carnage so im not sure if it all happened at once or it failed in stages. When it kicked the bucket fully i had the front over a couple foot ledge and was looking for traction to get the rear up and over. I was sitting on the gas tank and passenger lower link after losing my line a bit. My front Icons were fully drooped out, i contribute that to the breakage but i am still shocked at the break as it occurred with very little load on the shaft. I was almost clear when it snapped.

Before the break, a gnarly climb that i made up.

A few obstacles obstacles later and how it went down.

The mount skids got used also! This link now has a bend. Debating stock replacement or building my own.

You can see here that it looks like the joint locked up and got superheated before letting go.

A buddy cut the inner boot and removed the intermediate shaft as i didnt bring a spare. By removing the Int. shaft i was able to drive home with the inner and outer stubs installed to no ill effect.

Does this look infected?!

All i found after the pop.

I have been offroading, rock crawling, and trail riding for the better part of 12 years and have always had the mindset of; I work very hard for my money and for my mods on my vehicles, when i hit trails, whether they are 15 minutes from home or a 32 hour drive out to Moab, I like to hit optional lines and have a good time without worrying about breakage. I dont like turning around when stuff breaks and i hate holding up others on the trail so i like my rigs to work as planned. If shit breaks, oh well, you've got to pay to play but you can bet your ass i'll be upgrading said broken part.

Rather than start a cycle of returns at AutoZone, or even reboot my OEMs and have the strong likely-hood of another break while out having fun, I called glenyoshida of Lotus Development. I called the # from their site on a Sunday, not really expecting an answer but hoping to leave a message. To my surprise Glen answered, the owner and brains behind LD! I told him about my truck and how i use it, and the day's breakage. After speaking with him i decided a set of his Chrome-molybdenum axles would be perfect for my truck. Never once were these axles described as being unbreakable, they however will not explode if looked at funny like parts store axles and 12+ year old OEM axles. The only break to date on these axles that are run on 3 continents by heavy hitters was by our very own Dirtco recently. With no desire or plans to run 35s i feel very comfortable even if i lock the front of my 4runner that i am within the strength parameters of these axles. And still keeping an extra grand in my pocket over going with RCV axles. Which dont seem to have all the bugs worked out yet. I cannot speak highly enough of Glen as a fellow offroader and businessman. He was quick to answer any questions completely and with detailed whether via email or a phone call. Before, during, and after the sale! :reddance:

A wolf in sheep's clothing!

I yanked the broken and intact Autozone axles and returned them for a full refund. The Lotus install went smoothly and i am now enjoying being one of few to be running the trails in a 3rd gen t4r with chrom-moly axles.

You guys are smart for pulling the midshaft. I have a set of inner and outer axle parts in case I blow up my ring/pinion. Nicer to drive it off the trail in 2Lo and do the diff repair at home than having to drop the diff on the trail or risk further damage to the drivetrain.

As far as the rear lower links go, if you have a welder then you can stitch weld on a piece of c-channel for cheap or better yet if Toytec still has them in stock, these weld on skids are top notch. These are rated for around 6,000lbs of load and are the strongest link skids available that I know of for a 3rd gen.

If you go with c-channel use .120 wall or thicker for thickness c

Probably better to beef up the links or just bend it back into shape. It's likely that they will just get bent again so might as well put the money toward a fix, ya?

Thats smart about the extra parts, after i finish my cargo box ill have to throw those in there. As far as the lower links go, I would love to find a set of the ToyTec skids. I believe they were very slow sellers however and they are now discontinued. Im still going to call them and see if they can help me out, otherwise ill take your advise far as how to fab my own up. Just a matter of time until i bend them again and probably worse. Thanks Glen.

Right after i got my bumper installed i ordered a receiver shackle and a locking pin to deter thieves. Got both off amazon, the receiver is solid steel, not hollow tube like some out there. The locking pin fits the width of the CBI pin hole almost perfectly. Too take up the half inch of slack, I bought a pack of hose washers. A pack of 10 for about $1.50, i put one on either side of the pin to isolate it from rattling.

I didnt like the black, so of course it got painted dark silver to match everything else.

All ready to install.

And done.

Damn, just like that huh? Maybe one day I'll be able to convince myself to drop a grand on a pair of CV's. I guess I need to get my cherry popped and break one on the trail first, though.

Nice upgrade... you sure are moving fast with this one. :guitar2:

Went out with some buddies scouting for new trails a couple weeks back, gave the new bumper and axles a real workout. We found a really nasty ascent/descent trail that led us down into a 1/2 mile rock canyon. It was awesome, nice and technical. I was the leader so no pictures of my run, then i spotted everyone else through the madness.

The trail started out in a creek area.

The cool thing about our trails around here is most of them you can make as difficult or easy as you like. I tend to hit the more difficult lines. There are several ledges that range from 3-4" on one side of the trail to over 2' on the other. Where the water pools next to the ledges gets dug out and can get fun real quick!

Had to bump it here, thats air under the driver front.

Two large rocks on both side of a pool make this a fun and body damage likely obstacle. The entire driverside gets pushed down into the large rock, sliders are required!

One angle.

Other view.

Rock Tattoos

These paid for themselves big time. Full length gouges and the kickout saved the rear flare.

The offending rock with its prize.

We worked our way to a nice waterfall and had lunch. The guy with the "Bugout " JK has two awesome sister great danes. Kimber and Rolex.

We climbed out of the creekbed area and went exploring next, we are scouting for a large toyota only event in the last weekend of august that gets guests from all over. Check out nmfjrally.com for more details.

Coming down a steep drop, Colin's hitch served its skidplate duty here. I scraped up my CBI and receiver shackle pretty good here also.

Same spot.
