NateMob's "DD" Build

Great pics man. I really enjoyed looking through them. The rig is looking very beastly now with the new bumper! I love it!

Great pictures man! Looks like you all had a blast! Thanks for sharing. ..

Thanks dude, I really enjoy yalls wheeling trips also, hopefully one day i can make it out cali-forni-way.

That is what I will be focusing on for sure. Also gonna be focusing on tig to as they get paid good as well. And well hope you make the choice and come out next year. That TOTH looks like it would have been super fun

I hope to make many a wheeling trip next year, just found out Uncle Sam might have other plans for me though. :usa2:

Great pics man. I really enjoyed looking through them. The rig is looking very beastly now with the new bumper! I love it!

Thanks Mike, the bumper definitely changes the attitude of the truck from the stocker, thats for sure! The winch has been put to use on 3 separate occasions already.

Where can I find this hybrid front bumper of yours? I don't see it on CBI's site. Such a nice piece...I want one NOW!

I thought it would have been announced by now, It is nicely done. Give them a call.

A few changes going on 'round here, ordered a set of OMe 861s to replace my Superflex coils to better hold up the ol' girls "donk". Hopefully I dont have too much rake with the new coils. Bought a set of used 35s for a smoking deal, sold them after realizing they would be too much tire for my driving style and where i live. Picked up a set of front mud flaps to cut down on all the nasty that gets thrown all over the sides of my truck and to try and save my sliders from being sandblasted when bombing down gravel roads. And got a set of cherry Matte Bronze Konig Countersteer Xs. Trying to decide now what to do about my tire situation, keep running my 32s that are about half tread or sell the whole shebang to fund some 33s for the Xs. Decisions, decisions.

Hit a couple trails recently also. One being an awesome mountain trail that had quite a few mud holes.

Also took some out of towner Jeeps out on a local trail, put some new scratches on my skids, sliders, bumpers, and links and pulled a couple jeeps out! :thumb3:

Pulled this clown out of some quicksand when he chose a crappy line to hit the ledge in front of him. Ignore the guy in the background who was thinking of trying to winch him forward.:redbrick:

And this guy was hung up bad. on his driveline and rear diff, had to be hooked from the front from fear of rolling backwards and flopping into the water while i pulled him out from behind. The ledge height was around 3' while the water off to the driver's side was another 3' deep. It could have been bad. Wish someone had some better photos of before i pulled him out of the mess.

Been wheelin and dealin lately, got some fun stuff coming this winter.

A close friend's TDY here at Holloman is over so we went out for one last hurrah before he left this past week. The torrential rains we got this summer have really rearranged some of our obstacles and washed out some ledges to make them extra interesting.

Sequoia on 34's, this thing is a land yacht.

Fun ledge, scraped the bumper on the way up, It could stand to be tucked in just a little more to increase the approach angle. Still a 100x's better than stock!

No problems flexing out the rear with the brand new 861s back there. I think they will get even better after a couple more trips.

There's some 34s under there somewhere, He is trying the same line i came up but his longer wheelbase denied him. He got winched up once he buried himself up to the hubs.

gorgeous as always man. I'm a sucker for waterfalls.
And all those rigs ain't bad either!

Thanks dude, and yeah its pretty funny to have 20 guys standing around not saying much just staring at the waterfall. :wow:

A little tech mixed in with all the recent photos.

I upgraded from OME 890s to Toytec Superflex coils shortly after installing the rear CBI Bumper with Carrier because the amount of sag i was getting with the extra weight back there. I had heard all good stuff about the SF coils and that they were made to accommodate a various weights while still delivering a good ride on the street and crazy flex offroad.

I can say that yes, they flex like crazy and will max out your shocks no problem, and under a good bit of weight they squat a bit(1" or so) but still did a decent job of holding up the weight when leisurely driving around town or sitting still. But, offroad, the soft spring rate left much to be desired in the high speed, big hit department. I was constantly bouncing off my bumpstops with my standard wheeling gear of 60lbs of tools, small ice chest and my rig's weight. Albeit my truck is pretty heavy with sliders, front and rear bumpers, winch, full skids and a 1st gen roll bar. I would cringe every time i hit a dip or hole while on fire roads or desert trails and just waiting for the rear end to bottom out. Not a fun feeling and takes the fun out of going fast in the dirt. I searched around and saw that the majority of the guys outfitted like myself that were really using their trucks off road were running either the 9 wrap LC coil TCMach, the OME 861 BigFishAllDay, or the OME 891 JWaldz. After comparing setups and stances and how my truck gets (ab)used, I pulled the trigger on some OME 861 coils.

And man am i loving them! :biggrin2: The ride is much more planted and firm than the SF coils ever were whether on road or off. Taking turns with only the rear sway has always induced a decent amount of body roll, with the 861s, I am getting much less lean going through turns. I have even noticed in off camber situations where the rear is flexed out, the drooped out coil still supports the weight of the truck to keep things more level. Huge improvement.

They are a tall coil, so be prepared for a good bit of lift. After one week and with my 255/75/17s (32s) I am at 39 3/4" from ground to flare on the driver side and 39 1/2" on the passenger side. OME also takes into account the battery and the fuel tank being on the same side so one of the coils is about a 1/4" longer than the other. I have exactly 2" of rake currently. If it settles some, great, if not, im not really worried about it. I may turn up the front coilovers a touch. With both the 861s and the SF coils out of the truck and next to each other i was surprised to see them both to have the same unloaded length. The bar diameter used to make the coils is noticeable thicker on the 861s contributing to their superior load handling.

Here is the current stance after only a week and a half on the new springs.

Another issue that i have been needing to address was the Spartan Locker i recently installed in the rear axle. After about a month in the truck and driving the truck daily, I wasn't happy. It was loud going through turns, would lock up randomly, and would let out a huge bang if it unlocked under load. Not what i wanted even if the traction and manners offroad were awesome. I always run 30psi front and rear in my tires, airing up recently after a wheeling day i decided to go up to 35 front and rear. What a difference it made. Significant decrease in how often it would lock up and unload going through turns, still loud and noisy but less often for sure. Tyler, TCMach turned me onto some full synthetic gear oil by RedLine that he swears by, he runs it in his own DD with a Lockrite. Three quarts from amazon were ordered and this past weekend i drained the cheap, crappy, store brand 80-190w oil with the Heavyweight Shock Proof Redline fluid. Again, what a positive change. Quieter! Smoother! Less on road lockups! It was a God send because i was about to pull the Spartan and sell it. Now, I have to have the window down and be listening for the ratcheting through turns. Before i could hear it inside with the windows up. I have had it lock up on my through turns a couple times in the last few days, but instead of a BANG!, it quietly pops loose and i am on my way, drama free. The stuff is incredible and i'm glad i made the switch.

I was surprised as hell when i opened the first quart and it was bright re/pink!

Now i am happy as a clam at 35psi and running Redline gear oil, i am finally truly happy with the Spartan in my daily driver.

Full rebuild of my front coilovers this upcoming weekend as the amount of dirt they see and street miles has taken its toll on a few components. Installing new FK rod ends, new misalignment spacers and spiral-locks. Along with a new set of 14" 700lb King springs to replace the 13" 650lb Icon springs that come stock with all of Icon's coilovers. Looking forward to the increased spring rate and longer spring to provide my lift without having to dial in a shit ton of preload to support my rig's portly weight. :hatsoff:

Good to see the Redline helped out your locker situation. I've been running it since day 1 and man was I confused about all the reports of banging and ridiculous ratcheting. I've rallied my truck around the dirt feeder roads to the trails following captain supercharger FR4R and never had a dangerous lockup. Same goes for the street wet or dry, except I don't drive like a loser on the street haha. Also for what its worth I run 40psi on the street. so that may have something to do with it based on your experience

I've debated the swap to 861s ever since BFAD did it but I like the unraked look too much and i feel like my back end would be sky high with them. They look way too good on yours though.

On a different subject when are you coming up to CO to wheel! Also there is a trip to Moab in the works in March...

One more thing to add to my list then, mine has been more of a pain in the ass than usual lately. I'm due for new oil anyway and I was getting irritable enough to start looking for an elocker third

Clad to hear the gear oil helped the sounds. I am just running valvoline synthetic and it is as quiet as can be. I uses 85w-140 iirc in the rear and no issues there. The redline stuff is awesome though. Will have to try that in 20k or so.

Man I just looked up where Alamogordo NM is and I'm kinda kicking myself. I stayed in Las Cruces the night before backpacking for a week in the Gila Wilderness a few months ago. Should have totally got some wheeling in but nooo I was too busy starring at the border patrol.

The fluid has made an awesome improvement, Ill have to try a little more air pressure in the rear to see how it feels and handles at 40psi.

The 861s are a tall coil but man they ride awesome, i hope to raise the front up just a touch to help even things up, and thanks man!

Regarding CO and UT, man i want to get up there so badly. Just not enough time in the day, or $ in the bank. Keep me in the loop about this Moab trip, PM me the details that you have if you dont mind.

I would highly recommend it, before dropping the time and coin on an e-locker retrofit. Night and Day difference.

Yup its fancy stuff, modern science is incredible. haha

Enjoyed the pictures of that last ride. What shocks do you have matched up with the 861s?

Glad you liked them, wish i got more action shots to show off. I am currently running a discontinued Bilstein 5150 pn 25-186291, however i am running an outboard shock setup. Pretty much identical to what Ripcord did to his. The ride is nice fast or slow, without having to worry about bottoming out the shocks since i was able to mount them properly in relation to my bumpstop setup.

That's a lot of Mud for New Mexico!! :bigok:

Yup! Always have some down here in the canyons, when are you headed down?

No way?! Thats crazy dude, a few of the trips in my build thread are from trails just outside of Cruces. Next time you are down this way we will hit some trails for sure.

That is a great picture.

Glad you think so, the only way it could be any cooler looking would be if it was a dirt road with a little dust cloud. :hat:

My new King 14" long 700lb springs showed up today, praise is due to DownSouth Motorsports for an awesome deal and blazingly fast shipping.

Cannot wait to rebuild my coilovers, they need some TLC. The bright blue is going to take some getting used to. Anyone know if you can paint coils or will it flake off from the constant cycling?

Had a lax day at work yesterday, so i knocked out a project i have had on my mind lately. Unlike a couple of the cool kids around here, i didnt want to drop $$$ on a bolt on rear diff slider that would cause me to lose ground clearance at my already lowest point under the truck. I also didnt want to lose my parking brake, I have always used them and i think it helps keep stress off of the drivetrain if used daily. So i figured what the hell, ill make my own.

I have never much worried about the bottom of any of my off road trucks, there is quite a bit of steel there and the shape helps it slide and not catch badly. The center section on the other hand, whether front or rear, toyota axle to GM 14 bolt, the vulnerable area covering the rotating ring gear needs protection. I recently slide off a line in the rocks and sat down pretty hard on the rear axle exactly in line with the ring gear and put a decent dent in the housing. Much harder of a hit and the housing would have made contact with the spinning ring gear and trashed the gear set and possible knocked a hole in the housing. :nono: Either way, i had my scare and didn't want to worry about it again. So i made a simple yet stout diff guard.

All 1/8" US steel, MIG welded and ground smooth just for a clean and finished look. It is tied into the housing by weld at the bottom and the two sides. I made a template from cardboard first to help me follow the shape and bends in the housing. I knew i didnt want to lose my parking brake so i drill a hole just a few thousandths larger than the m8x1.25 bolt and had the center section tie into the factory thread parking brake center guide. Also provides extra support to the least supported portion of the guard. Of course i couldn't cover the fill plug so i left ample room around it to allow access. It turned out exactly how i wanted. Lots of extra protection where i need it and no worries about holding mud or water, Its sturdy beyond what i thought it would be based on its simplicity, with no loss in ground clearance and enough of a gap to where if it does hit its got some room to deflect.

Also cut off the old parking brake cable mount and ground it all down smooth.

So even the guy that pulls out all the jeeps gets stuck sometimes! LOL

I get this call today, hey dude, can you come out to red hills, I was testing out the flex of the new coils (which look pretty sweet btw) and they closed the optional exit! He tried to go over this 3 foot wall of dirt! So here is the picture when I pull up!

He was barely stuck tho.. he could have gotten out without me, but it would have been fun.

Here is another shot of us.

Toyotacolin , thanks again man. You saved my bacon, a couple nice shots there. Hopefully more this weekend.

Have you thought about plasti-dipping them black? I figured it would definitely be a more flexible coating than spray paint? Not sure how well that would hold up, but I was planning to do that on my rear Sway-A-Way coils because they are bright red, but then I got lazy, lol.
