Just picked up a 2015 Trail 4Runner. Have been looking and researching for a while and finally took the plunge! My previous truck is a 2011 Xterra Pro-4x, which has been a great truck, but it's going on the market. Really hate to sell it, as it's just been solid and reliable, but I need a vehicle that i will also use for work. Needed more leg room in the rear for clients and co-workers and should have a little nicer interior for a more professional appearance. The interior on the Xterra was great for my use, but I really need leather for a step up in appearance and the nav will help with road trips.
The Xterra was very capable offroad (factory E-locker) and I wanted something that was at least as capable. Have seen lots of reviews and videos showing what great trucks Toyota makes and know that the addition of A-TRAC makes the 4runner even more capable.
Another change that I needed to make was to go to a less aggressive tire. Had a set of 255/85 Toyo MTs on the Xterra, which are great tires, but would need something more tame for the 4Runner. I don't mind the road noise of a more aggressive tire but probably not as client friendly. I'll be spending more time on the road with other people in the car and need a more road oriented tire, but don't want to lose too much offroad ability. Decided to go with a set of 275/70 AT3s based on a lot of positive reviews. If they perform as well as the reviews imply, then I should be good for a mix of road and trail.
Considered going with a Trail Premium to get the Softex leather seats, but local dealers that had them weren't giving much on the price for the Premium models - a little more rare so they know they know they don't have to discount them much. Found a Trail Edition that was basically stock. The only options on it were the stereo/nav upgrade and rubber floor mats. The TrueCar price before tax and tags was $33,881. The leather upgrade was $1500 from the dealer through a local customizer. The leather kit quality looks really good - like a factory installation - and comes with a lifetime warranty. Bought from a local dealership that is part of Sonic Automotive, where they price all vehicles based on TrueCar pricing with that fixed price on the web and on the window. Really pleased with the process - no pressure and no salesman games.
I've owned a range of 4x4s over the years but this is my first Toyota (including a 96 Trooper (great truck), an '00 R50 Pathfinder, an '05 Nissan Titan, the '11 Xterra, and we currently have an '06 R51 Pathfinder).
Looking forward to many fun miles in the new rig! Will get some pics up soon!
