Need advice on body work/ rust removal

Any experience with the bushwacker cutouts?? I was gonna get flares anyway and if I'm correct it looks like I might get away with just removing the rusted metal around the wheel well and slapping these on. I'm gonna buy those in a couple months cuz I'm in the same boat as you. I don't think you have to cut sheet metal to mount. Probably just drill some holes and put mounting clips in them.

Thats why I said to get a doner truck, a quarter panel needs to be cut & welded. Not easy like a front fender.

The pillar that separates the front and the back door. the rear door hinges on it. In my case I will have to notch the new rocker around that due to the fact that my rust is up in the area the door sits in as shown in my picture. I am going to cut it all in and spot weld it so my body guy can finish it so it will look the best it can. I will do the best I can to "step by step" the process but when it comes to rocker panels, each situation is different in the fact that you may not need the whole rocker... you just may replace a section or 2 or just the bottom exterior section.
 
Damn. I can guarantee you that the reason why its rusting around the rear fender area. Its because water gets in between the two metals where the fender flares screw into and where the bolt holds the rear seat belt!. Anyways..... thats a ***** area to fix. Because its such a big piece, and it has a contour, and bend and whole nine yards, not to forget the gas tank area! Pull back the rear inside plastic trims. And looks inside. Most likely rust inside to!

Id buy a donor truck and cut out parts! or just take a loss and move on!

Seems like extensive work. Not to seem insensitive, but there are plenty of 4r out there that don't have rust and are in good shape. I would sell it and pick up another!

LOL, you guys get scared easy don't ya? I just received a new rocker panel and dog leg. The frame on this one is just fine. It's some work but it's limited to an area where some repair work was done improperly a few years back.

It can rust regardless of the flares. They come from the factory with some weird square insert that the screws go into in the wheel well. If the black flares were installed, they would get drilled out for a thicker screw. With that said I think those weird square inserts collect moisture and salt. I see flareless 4Runners with rust too. It's not really a design flaw TBH. This type of rust only started becoming common on 3rd gens about 3 years ago. Every other competing vehicle started showing this kind of rust back in like 2009.

The other side if this vehicle is flawless, no rust at all. This 4 runner has been in the family since it came of the lot so I owe her some payback for lasting this long. I've decided to make her into a money pit and pimp her as best I can. Just put a new Borla catback on today. I'm having fun with it, what the hell, right?
