Need Advise on Towing my 3rd Gen.

I am getting ready to move from CA to NM (military). I have been looking at the companies like Uhaul and such and they all say my 3rd Gen is too heavy. I am hoping some of you have towed your 3rd Gen's cross country. It will be towed behind the moving truck. Looking to do it as cheap as possible, while being safe of course. I am thinking about just building a tow bar for the front and flat towing it... Any advise would be much appreciated!

I towed a second gen 4Runner from NC to PA I put the front wheels on a dolly removed the driveshaft and pulled it that way. That's how i'd do it.

That's what I'd like to do, but their website says they can only handle 4500 lbs, my 97 is 5500 lbs...

4runner is probably around 4000 lb's (less than 1.8 tons for sure). A hilux is about 1700 Kg's

Don't you have a friend who can drive your 4runner to NM and buy him a return ticket. This way you can carry more goodies in your 4runner as well.

Sticker on my door says 5300 I think... I have 2 4runners a wife and kid that are coming. Trying not to add another person to have to put up in a hotel and feed and all that...

I towed my 97 from CO to PA and back, both times with Uhaul. The first time I used a dolly and disconnected the driveshaft, felt fine and had no problems going 70-75 mph. On the way back I got the full trailer because I didn't want to disconnect the driveshaft again. Same experience, just a little easier to drive.

5300 would be max gross vehicle weight.

My wife and I towed a 97 Exploder from MD back to MI because the recently rebuilt tranny blew a seal. We rented a moving truck and trailer. We did have to size the tow rig to the weight of the Exploder, but that was the only stipulation.

Easily under 4500#

I towed a 2001 Explorer on their car hauler. No issues.

When we moved from Phoenix to Nashville, my buddy pulled his 1st gen 4runner on a full trailer attached to the moving van and had no problems.
