Need help in buying factory navigation unit

Hello all,

I have a '10 limited with JBL 15-speaker but NO nav, and found a factory navigation for sale but I'm hesitant because I'm not sure I can get it to work in my vehicle...

Has anyone here successfully installed a factory nav into their non-nav 4runner, JBL or non-JBL? And if so, please share how they did so and if all the features of the unit works, etc.

Thank you and hope someone can help me out.

BTW, I've attached a photo of the back of a JBL non-nav unit. It's slightly different than the non-JBL units. I've searched all over the forum but haven't found a picture of one yet so hopefully this will help someone here down the road.

I think the problem you will run into will be not having the correct wiring harnesses(wires) behind your dash.

For instance the GPS antenna, you probably don't have one of those hidden behind your dash, would the JBL-Nav system come with one of those? Or is it somehow built into the wiring harnesses?

Another thing is the backup camera. the Nav system has the camera feed running from the rear camera to the nav. Even if you had a nav unit put in there, i dont think the plugs you need to view the backup camera would be there, not to mention the reverse sensing feed.

My backup camera feed goes into my rear view mirror. There aren't any feeds behind my dash, i had to run my own wires from the rear view mirror to my dash.

I don't want to discourage you, just want to bring up some ideas.

Any objections to going aftermarket?
 
If you are looking for navigation, there are better options than the factory nav. I have the factory JBL nav and I am not too happy with the navigation part of it. Sound wise it is ok. I find myself using my android and google maps if I need to get somewhere as the nav just doesn't cut it for directions. I'm seriously considering aftermarket.
 
Get the aftermarket and avoid the headache

714runner, the other posters are right. I have the 2010 with the nav and it kinda blows. And my proof is, my wife bought a new car with no nav unit. I bought a mid end pioneer unit, ran the wires, installed the nav and back up camera and it blows the toyota nav/radio controls/usb access away, by leaps and bounds. Get an aftermarket for sure.

Go aftermarket. I'm all about OEM, but this is something that toyota is way behind on (Navigation and In-dash tech in general).

I dont know what price you are getting quoted, unless it's free I wouldn't do it.

that kenwood model looks pretty sweet, as i've wanted weather on my in dash nav for awhile. Not sure why someone would need facebook and twitter on there but whatever. Pretty cool idea either way, i'm assuming it gets it's data feed via your cell phone, which is kinda cool but potential for using all your data plan for the month!!
 
Thanks everyone for the replies, they are all very helpful. I really like the look of the oem navigation and I'm comfortable using it, but ultimately I'm going to run into problems with the install which was my main worry... I guess the only way to go is aftermarket. I just don't like the look of it when installed, don't know how I feel about the empty space on the sides..

If I go aftermarket, will the original amplifier still be used to run the speakers instead of running the speakers in to the head unit?

I haven't replaced mine yet, but i will within the next few months. I'm just waiting to read reviews from other's who have purchased 2013 models before moving forward. But there are others on here that have done it and it looks clean.

I have an SR5. My pioneer Nav looks sweet. I think there are 2 options of dash kits. One does look a little funny. While the dash kit that i used looks sweet. Then i painted my dash kit satin black(it really wasn't that hard)

Question 2, well an aftermarket head unit will be more powerful than the stock head unit. If you wanted to utilize an amp in your setup, you would probably be better off going aftermarket anyway(even though that just increases the cost of the parts and install costs)

Did you use plasti dip?
That would be a good alternative if you didn't

you mean to paint the dash kit? No, i just sanded it really lightly using high grit sand paper to roughen up the whole dash kit. then i sprayed like 6 or 7 very very light coats of satin black spray paint. Then i waited a day or so and sprayed clear coat over that like 3 very light coats.

turned out beautiful.
 
Wow I see the differences between the aftermarket bezels and the one you have looks nicer for sure! At first I didn't like the look of aftermarket at all but now I think it's starting to grow on me
