Long story short the head gaskets need to be replaced and with the miles i was gonna do the water pump, timing chain ect with the miles on my wifes (now mine) 04 4runner V6 w/ 191K. All the dealers want $2500+ All the local shops dont want to do it or know how and are telling me to run it till it blows. I could do it myself just dont have the time with work and 2 kids. What would you guys recomend doing? Has anyone sawpped in a 4.7 V8 for the V6?

Ive never heard of a 6 being swapped out for an 8. The V8 4WD's are full-time and have other equipment like a trany cooler.

If i were you, id call around to the 3-4 closest Toyota Dealership Shops and get the prices for the work, get the lowest price and see if the other places will beat it. Worked for me on my V8's 90k service + timing belt replacement + water pump.

Good luck!

Why are you doing the chain? Is it making noise? If you need HG's then do the HG's and be done with it. If you want a V8 then get the HG's fixed and then trade it in for a V8. It's not going to be worth the hassle to swap the engine.

Doing other component while it was down due to the miles. There was no noise soming from the chain.

These are overhead cams right??? Well to remove the heads you have to remove the chain. Might as well replace it as long as you're removing it.
