Need new rack and pinion. And recommendations?

I'm a firm believe in all things OEM. However, this is one of those parts I can't bring myself to buy. This is mainly due to the 2-3ish year lifespan of every rack I've had since bumping up to 35's (I also do a generous amount of hard wheeling).

If you don't have 35's or wheel a bunch then I think OEM is the way to go, if you can afford it.

If you're like me though, and tend to go through racks rather quickly I've found a great rack for the price and it's a brand new unit. The AAE 3273N is what I believe to be a great alternative for those that can't dish out the $$$ for a new OEM or feel as if an OEM is too costly to go through in such a short period of time. It can be found for around $250 without a core charge. RockAuto usually has the lowest price on it and you can also use the forum's discount.

This is my first time trying this rack and I have high hopes for it! I've had it for roughly 3 months now.

but when you calculate the ITR... is the rack really that much more money? i run 33". God knows how old this rack and pinion is. It was there since i bought the truck used

How many NEW OEMs have you gone through?

2.. 1 original and 1 that had a very small amount of miles on it (got it from a friend who sas'd soon after he replaced the rack).

35"? I got 33" and it just took a dumb after owning the truck for 4 years. Since owning I had 33".

Can anyone confirm if the OEM LCA BUSHINGS come as set of 2 or no

As I need a new rack and pinion too, anyone try rebuilding the OEM? I think I saw that the seals could be bought separately.

i just want to know now lol if anyone bought oem lca bushings, if it comes in 2 or the price is for 1 bushing.

because im going to replace those to while the rack is out

You save money by replacing the bushings instead of paying for a whole new LCA. If you go the bushing replacement route, I'd recommend either using OEM or aftermarket Whiteline poly bushings.

And, infamousRNR and I have a video for this as well. There is a chance your cam adjusters will be rusted into the sleeve of the bushing. It this happens, you have to use a reciprocating saw and cut on both sides of the bushing to free the arm from the frame. I recommend Diablo Demon Carbide Tipped Blades. I've heard they are awesome and will lessen your cutting time dramatically.

does this mean i would need new cam adjusters that you used brand new in your video?

If they come out without a fight, you can reuse them. If you have to pound them out with a lot of force and they deform or they're so rusted in there you have to cut them out, you have to put new ones in. There's 3 parts to the cam adjusters. Here's a link to Camelback Toyota Parts:

Items #14-16 make up the cam adjusters. A bolt, a cam and a plate. #15 is the cam that gets stuck in the bushing sleeve. Since you live in a rust belt, I'd buy 4 of the cams just to be safe. If the bolt and plate are only a little rusty, you can just clean them up. If they're really rusty, I'd replace those as well.

my undercarriage is clean, no bolts are rusted, so i highly doubt it will be rusted.Well at least i hope not. I tell you, it looks much cleaner then the 4runner in the video. Then again, it is NJ and my luck is shit lol. Plus ive gotten like 2-3 wheel alignments in past few months. Due to changing my suspension. So maybe it will be lose?

hows this for overhaul on front end?

The cam bolts sieze. Even if rust free high chance one may be frozen. I had 2 frozen on rust free CO car.

when you guys ordered the stuff for cam adjusters. Did everything come as a pair or single units?

i just ordered OEM LCA Bushings of ebay for good price. Got 2 bushings for $50 and another 2 bushings for $60. I don't know if Toyota sells these in sets of single. Probably price per bushing which is close to $50 per one.

Im ordering OEM Rack and pinion, comes with oem inner tie rods. Im also ordering oem outer tie rods. I think front end should be, lets say tits.

I didn't order the parts because neither rig I worked on was mine. The cam adjuster parts have separate part numbers so I imagine they come separately and not as pairs.

If you're not sure if the bushings come as a pair, just call the seller and find out. If you use Camelback Toyota, call and ask to speak to Amanda. She'll help you out and make sure you say Timmy the Toolman says hi.

Thank you. I did call and ask. They said all parts are units of 1. I ended up ordering the rack and pinion, and driver and passenger outer tie rods. This was cheaper from them then camelback.

And I ordered used cam bolts. And OEM bushings from eBay. For much cheaper. Bushings are close to $50 per bushings. Your talking about $200 in just bushings. So I paid under $150 for bushings. And OEM
