Yeah I just purchased everything for my CB. I am doing the Diamond 400 mount instead. I can't have mine on my roof so the next best thing is on the tailgate.

Looks good, I emailed them today. How much shorter is it from the stock antenna? Tough to tell from photo.

I believe he said at 29" the one version is about 3" shorter than oem (so 32" roughly, for those of you playing at home).

Use a piece of bike inner tube under it to protect your paint?

As pointed out, it is just about 3 inches shorter if you don't get the quick release. If you do, then it is about the same height.

And a side view. As you can see, the antenna is shorter than my ski rack, and during the summertime it should be shorter than my Yakima LoadWarrior.

The Diamond K400 Comes with an aluminum plate that goes between the door and the set screws. Mine works fine with it and no screws in your paint. First suggestion would be to buy shorter set screws though since when you close the door, they hit the body.

Aside from looking burly as f*** this setup gets INCREDIBLE AM/FM reception compared to the stock antenna. I haven't gotten around to doing the WX 75 and splitter install, but will update this thread when I do. I spend a lot of time on the road chatting on my CB during my weekend NJ-->VT-->NJ commute all winter, so hopefully I can provide some solid performance info for you guys.

Did you ever do the splitter mod to use the antenna for a CB too?

Just wondering the best way to hook it up.

Anyone familiar with RF principles and theory? At CB's 27 Mhz frequency a 1/4 wave length antenna is 108" (9') long. When it is made physically shorter by loading (winding the wire around a form) it gets less and less efficient. Add a splitter to make it also work at other radio frequencies makes it more inefficient. If your looking for a very short range set up you'll probably happy, but for decent 2 way use you may be disappointed.

Depends on terrain of course, but a mile or 2 tops under best conditions with a set up such as that. If it's just for trail use it will probably be OK.

I've done something similar on my Land Cruiser: a custom mount (wagongear.com), a HD spring, a 4' Firestik, a MatchMaker splitter and a Cobra 75wx st. The radio reception is improved and the CB performance is OK for my usage (short range). This is a compromise.

I will probably just use a magnetic antenna when I go out with the 4Runner, as the best position is in the middle of the roof and I don't want a short antenna for range performance.

Thanks for the response Gabriel. This sums up what I've been reading elseware too regarding this type of antenna rig. It looks great but I'm afraid I'd like a little more performance out of it so I'll have to fab something up for the roof.. I'm trying to avoid drilling anything unnecessary.

This is a great option though for those of us using both CB and Ham. Ham for long distance, CB for those times when your running trails and not everyone has Ham.
