There have been studies that have indicated that the fumes that give off the new car smell is bad for your health as it is akin to sniffing glue. As a result car companies are coming up with ways to reduce or eliminate the addictive new car smell.

My 4Runner kept its new car smell for a long time. Actually, my truck still has a pleasant aroma after 1.5 years! :D

That literally went out the window the first day I owned the truck.

so basically your saying you had diareaha in your truck?

A KIA has a new car smell sitting at their dealership, but that won't make me get rid of my 4Runner for one

you could always just fold down your rear seats and put the kia in your 4runner to enjoy the smell? :p

im jealous of everyone who buys a new car...i bought my dads 94...and he got an 03...he would come in the house and comment on the smell...so i went out and got a "New Car Scent" tree to hang from my mirror...doesnt smell anything like his did...but even that smell grew on me...now i buy the really big ones so the car smells REALLY good...

I definitely love the new car smell. I'm trying right now to preserve it as long as i can. So that means, no farting, no smelly food or anything (that's why i have a tupperware box in the baclk), and NO OPENNING WINDOWS!

Back when I had my RX300, this is what I did. I swear, up to the day that I traded that car in for my current GX, it had a new car smell in it still. Add to that, I only used it officially in rain (meaning raining with rain drops falling and the road wet, making splashes) once, and my sales lady was AMAZED at how I took care of it. :D

That New Car Smell that people "Love" so much is Formaldehyde, Also known for preserving dead bodies!! They stick a tiny bit on the carpet of new cars underneath the seats, And yes it can be dangerous to your health!!

I do quite a bit of work with cadavers every year and am around formaldehyde several times per month. Trust me when I say that I have never had the displeasure of sitting in a new car that smells like formaldehyde!!

btw- Little Tree makes a "New Car" spray that works very well and smells great.

All I know is that According to the FDA, Department of Transportation, my friend who works at a car dealership, my brother who worked at a car dealership and actually used the formaldehyde mixture, and others. The substance they use to make that smell is partially formaldehyde!

Can you provide links to the FDA & Department of Transportation mentioning the formaldehyde?? Sorry, just joking with you! I wasn't trying to discredit you by saying a new car doesn't smell like formaldehyde, so please don't take it personally.
I can certainly see how a small part of the smell comes from it. If you ever get a chance to smell straight formaldehyde you will understand how it would be tough to pick out the formaldehyde from that sea of eye-burning odors we refer to as the lovely New Car Smell!

edit- Why do they put a tiny bit of formaldehyde under the seats in the first place??

Hey Im in the same boat as you! I don't see how formaldehyde can be used to make that smell, but it does! Ive smelled straight formaldehhyde before and well I don't know how on earth they mix it with other stuff to produce that new car smell!!! Also, I think you can just type in "Formaldehyde, New Car Smell" in Google and a bunch of information will come up for ya! Sorry, when I said Formaldehyde under the seats, I ment the Formaldehyde Mixture!!
