New fine-grained VSC OFF Mod for V6 1GR

Totally my fault. I had you email instructions prior to purchase and I figured they were the same.

Had a friend who is much more versed in vehicle electronics install this for me. We tested it in the parking lot and an ice patch and it worked! One thing to note, when I press the VSC off button my dash does light up with VSC off and center diff lock locked. The center diff is falsely illuminated. I paid for him to install, I probably won't put too much more effort in and will just live with the falsely illuminated center diff light.

It should not happen. Sounds like he cut a wrong wire during the installation on step 8(yellow and orange).
One guy did similar error. There are two wires green with red and one can confuse these.

so you're thinking he cut the yellow and orange (which pin # is this?) as opposed to the green and red wire (pin 6)? I can have him take a look at it again. Would the method he did render the mod useless? I will have to test it out on some dirt/snow soon, he was the one that tested it on the ice not me.

Not quite. I think he confused Green and Red from pin 6 with Green And Red from another pin while he was connecting yellow and orange wires. You'd better double check it. Mind that pins are numbered as if you are looking in front of the connector.
The mod would not be useless as VSC is off. You just would not use all of its capabilities and confusing Center Diff Light is one of them.

Thanks Kliv, going to drop the 4runner off this morning and have him take a second look at it. I paid close to $450 US to have that and my compressor installed so I'd like the full functionality. I should start looking into learning about soldering and wiring...

Here's the pics he sent and message after he opened it up again for me. "So it's spliced into #6, green with red. There aren't any other orientations that wind up with pin 6 and a green wire..."

Does this orientation look correct?

Yes, the second wire from the top is the one. Just to confirm. He cut it, connected one piece to the orange, another one to the yellow - right?
If so, please disconnect the mod from its harness and try to lock center diff. It should not light the led when the diff is locked.
If so, please change orange and yellow wires orientation, connect harness and check the mod once again.

Hey Kliv, I finally got around to installing mine.

I’m seeing the same issue as BendRunner:
Mod disables VSC, however center diff lock is also illuminated.
I’ve verified that the diff lock light works as factory with the module plugged in.
I’ve also verified that the diff lock light does NOT work with the mod unplugged.

Please advise!

Hey Kliv, I finally got around to installing mine.

Tried swapping the orange and yellow wires, no change in behavior.

Another couple notes that may help:
The diff light is SLIGHTLY dimmer than normal when using the mod, just barely noticeable.

It also seems that the mod prevents 4x4 from enabling or disableing completely when enabled. The 4x4 and diff lock light will continue to flash as long as the mod is enabled. As soon as I disable, the blinking stops as normal.

Also checked the resistance between those two pins on the board with the mod unplugged, Open circuit.

I'll fix the unit and send a new one to all owners. Will also pay 10USD for every unit I got back.
Wiring routine will not change. So, all you will need is to unplug old one and plug in new one. So, you can use it till you get the updated.
Will send e-mail to you all once everything is done.
Sorry for the inconvenience, but it happens with a brand new models from time to time.

In you last step i see that you only require 2 cans with beer? 2+ hr job would seem to require a few more.

Nice write up. I have many things to do on mine still.

This mod will NOT make your truck 2wd, but will allow you spin the tires . If you are not so interested in offroading, it will give you some fun at least.

To summarize, for the installation you will require:
1. The Unit
2. Momentary button (84988-35070 if you like FJ button)
3. Connector for the button (90980-10933 for FJ) and 4 terminals that type: Home » Shop » Connectors / Harnesses » Sumitomo » Injector Connector Terminal (22 - 16 gauge) [heat resistant copper alloy]
You may use 4 repair kits found by Doozi (28998-12340).
4. 1-2 m of wire.
5. 2+ hours (depending on how quick you are)
6. minimal set of tools
7. (Optional) 2 cans with beer
