New guy,and a Junkyard Mod! (New Steering Wheel)

Did a little Junkyard mod today!


My 1996 4 Runner's steering wheel, after 160k, was gross. Chewed up and sticky.
Found a 1998 wheel in perfect cond. At the yard today and did the swap.
Very straightforward EXCEPT YOU NEED THE AIRBAG CONNECTOR FROM THE 98+ CLOCKSPRING.
The 96/7 use a different connector to the clockspring.
Took about 20 minutes, everything works (Horn Cruise, No SRS light, etc) and feels great. :bounce:


!EDIT!: PLEASE disconnect the battery for at least 30 minutes before touching this. Don't get hurt guys.

It had gotten to the point where I needed to wash my hands after driving, due to the stickiness. I think this looks a bit better than a cover anyways.

Anyone know if there is a difference between same year black SR5 wheel and the limited tan wheel?

Are all 3rd gen steering wheels interchangeable in this way — e.g., 2002 on a 1996?

I can only assume so, my knowledge is severely limited in later 4Runners.

As long as you're ok with splicing the clockspring connectors together, I don't see how they could have really changed too much.

When I drive, I put the steering wheel between my index and middle finger while at the same time resting my index finger on the upper arm of the steering wheel, then my elbow rests on the window sill. I see other people in tacos and 3rd gens doing the same thing all the time. I oncr drove a 97 3rd gen and it had the older style wheel, you just cant hold the wheel like that, and its really uncomfortable.

anyways if you have that older style steering wheel your missing out.

also my steering wheel is a semi flexible urethane, i dont remember how it looked when my dad got it, but its glossy now from being used so much.

I have the old style wheel. It steers the truck I like the newer style wheels, but changing out my wheel is seriously far down my list of things I want to do.

Looks good! I tend to drive with just my index fingers too ha, didn't know that was a "3rd gen thing". As far as covers go, I recently put on a stitch-on leather cover that was like 8 bucks with free shipping from Amzn, was skeptical at first but it doesn't look cheap at all and feels great. Did it to preempt my oem wheel from tearing up like the one you replaced. Brand is Lemonbest if interested.

Seabun: those covers look good, however, My Home Ec teacher always told me I was the worst sewer she'd ever seen. Lol. I'll look into those though.
