New motor or Rebuilt?????

I am looking for a good source for either a rebuilt or brand new crate motor for a 1996 Sr5 V6 4runner. Does anyone know a good source and or have any past experience with engine replacement? Will the new 03 v6 work with a 96 model? With the enigine replacement would there be anything I could do to maximize performance.

Welcome to the forum!

As far as putting in a 4.0L V6 or 4.7L V8 into the 3rd gen, i doubt that you could fit either engine. The engine bay on the 3rd gen is tight enough...i don't think the 4.0L V6 will fit.

Sorry...but good luck in finding an engine.

BTW, what happened to your original 3.4L V6 engine??

well the reason for the new engine my wifes 4runner has 150k on it I was curious if I should trade it for something new or keep it and trade my car and just rebuild or replace the engine in the 4runner when needed. I dont want to trade the 4runner it has been a great vehicle I think I will just trade my car in and I will drive the 4runner and get my wife something new. Thanks for the info.

Your 3.4L V6 can run at least 200-250,000 miles. I don't think you will need to rebuild it anytime soon...given that it has no problems so far.

Anyway, if you trade in your 4runner right now, the $$ that you get back will be minimal.

I keep cars forever and it has been my experience that other parts fail on the car long before the engine gives out. I had a Honda Civic wagon with 262,000 miles, the engine ran fine, but the transmission was making a noise, the CV joints were clicking on both sides, plus quite a few other little problems. When I added it up, it didn't make economic sense to spend $1,500 on a $500 car so I sold it for $300. My old Acura, I decided to spend $1,500 on it when it had 160,000 miles old. It now has 183,000 miles and the engine is just fine.

Unless you see a problem with your engine I bet it will be fine for many years to come. BE SURE to change the oil often. I do know that buying a re-built engine instead of getting a brand new engine is usually the best way to go, if your engine ever should fail. I have no idea what the cost of a new engine would be though.

Well if you want something to do with your weekends you could always shop around junkyards and find a good engine. Pull her apart, clean her up, have the crank polished, rebuild the heads throw new bearings, rings, and oil pump on her. If you want to build it up a little. Have the heads and intake ported and polished etc. You should be into it alot less than a rebuilt long block.
