How come when I click on the down arrow to read new posts in a thread and then return to the forum index the arrow does not dissapear (and there isnt a new post) and I have to click mark forum as read before they clear? Other forums I use will clear that arrow for the threads I enter. I think it just makes reading a bit easier.

Also is it possible to change the 'mark forum as read' link to send you back to the main index instead of the forum index you are currently in? I would think if you are marking it as read you dont want to be there any more (well at least I don't).

I guess thats more of a suggestion than a question and probably should of gone in the other forum.

For whatever reason, there are a lot of weird problems people are experiencing with this forum. What I have done using XP Pro IE6 I changed two settings that made a significant difference in diminishing the amount of problems I experience. Try them both:

For both you will need to go to Tools, Internet Options

First go to the last tab "Advanced"
Scroll down till you see "Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed", it's towards the bottom of the list.

Then the next thing I did was go to the "General" tab, under "Temporary Internet files" click the button "Settings", then try one or both: "Every visit to the page" and/or "Every time you start Internet Explorer".

Good Luck!

Sorry, I have no idea - I never even realized there was a down arrow until I looked for it after reading your question, I've always just used the right arrow. As for changing where the link sends you, I see your point but I'm not a professional computer guy so I would prefer not to make any hacks to the vBulletin software - I like to leave things "stock" to the extent possible.

Thanks Iman, I tried both but the down arrow still stays there. :(

Understandable about not wanting to mess with it GG. I like the down arrow because it takes you to the first unread post whereas the right arrow just takes you to the last post made.

About one third of the time, when I click new posts, I get:

vBulletin Message
Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms.

But when I look at the full forum, there are clearly new posts - what gives?

ditto here

i also get no new posts at times. have to refresh the page, and then wait for someone to post, then the new ones show up when the first visit doesnt work.

Hmm...I had that problem for the first time today. What gives? Has the board been modified recently?

Not sure what the problem is - it's functioning fine for me.

Remember that there are a few quirks you should know about the new posts button in case you weren't aware of them already.

When you are NOT logged in it will say "View Today's Active Threads" and clicking on it will give you a list of all threads in which a post has occurred in the last 24 hours - even if you've already seen them before.

When you ARE logged in it will say "View New Posts" and clicking on it will only show you the threads in which a new post has occurred SINCE THE LAST TIME YOU LOGGED IN. So if it's been 3 days since you last logged in it will show all the new oosts over the last 3 days. If it's only been 8 hours since you last logged in it will only show you the new posts over the last 8 hours.

Therefore, if you log in (and remember automatic log in is an option), log out, then relog in again right away, hitting the "View New Posts" button will give a result that says "Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms."

GatorGreg:
I have the auto log in activated, so that doesn't expain the problem. It happens about 1/3 of the time, and when I click on the logo, and look at the full range of forums, there will be many that have posts, since the last time I looked.

I know you are the Admin, but that is just not true. I tried from many different computers, and I have been away from the site for days. Then come back visit, and the New Posts come up empty. I log off hence clearing the cookies, and then I can see all the new posts, even once posted a few minutes ago, a few hours ago, etc.

Something is up with the way how the site monitors your activity to do searches for new threads. I wish I new the solution but I don't.

Sorry guys, I don't know what the problem is. It works fine for me (as I described above) both at work and at home :dunno:

It did it again this AM, and I was looged on when I came on site. There were clearly new posts, yours above for instance, but it said there were none.

I get this problem too. Whenever it happens, I have to flush the browser cache and remove all my cookies. That seems to clear it up.

My guess is that there is a bug in the way the site checks / stores your last login date. At some point it inadvertantly writes a 'future' time value. From then on, the 'new posts' feature will never find any matches.

ok is it just me or did the new server move fix the new posts issue everyone was having in this thread?

since the new server move, everything seems to be working now for the last 2 days.

New posts button is acting up for me again. Was working great for a few weeks, but shows no new posts that past two times I've tried it. Anyone else starting to get problems again?

Yes, it happened to me. I've been away from home and my computer for a week and the "view new posts" button results in no new posts since my last visit.

I know you guys have posted at least ONE thing since I was gone!

:p
