New speakers for base HU in 2004 4rnr

Hey guys. I know that the best piece to replace on the stock headunit (non-JBL) would literally be the head unit, but that is not an option. So, what speakers would you all rec'd that would fit in the stock locations? I have Infinity's in my old Grand Am that sounded great, but had ZERO base. I am not looking to throw a ton of money at my truck as I am getting more and more into paintball, and need to keep money in reserve for that! I need speakers that will work off my stock non-JBL headunit, and will not require an amp or separate sub.

I have had MB Quartz separates in my old Dodge and nissan trucks. I swear by them..I inherited my first pair when I got the truck from my bro. Altogether they lasted like 5-7 years of HEAVY abuse. I moved them to my dodge and when I sold that they were still working good.

The good thing is that MB's come in all sizes and they have different levels of performance. I only had the basic level (cheapest) and they rocked. I think they ran less than $200 for a set of 6.5" seperates. But the more expensive line runs about $350-$400 per set.....those must SLAM (only assuming here) if the entry level speakers performed so well.

Anyways, not sure if they sell them where you live, but I highly recommend them for their "bang for buck" qualities, overall sound quality and longevity.

I had MB Quarts in my first 4runner too and moved them to my last 2004 runner. they were phenomenally clear and the mids if you dynamat the doors, were tight and pretty deep sounding. That said, from what I hear, they got bought out by the parent company that owns Rockford(?) and apparently, their quality sucks now.

I switched to Focals in my current '08 highlander but plan to buy the new 2010 runner or a used '09 the end of the year since I miss driving a truck.

When I do, I'm going to either JL Audio C5s or maybe Boston Accoustics as the Focal Polyglass 6.5 components that I have that also fit in a 4runner, is clear but has no depth to them. If you like music that is more natural and warm, stay away from Focals. they sound very clear but not very articulate and spacious...more flat and the voice can be very harsh. I had to tune my crossover to "tone down" the voice frequency but it seem to take away from some of the detail highs.

Thanks guys. My stock H/U went on the fritz and has been trying to eject/load CD's that arent there and the numbers on the display keep going haywire. Today the damn thing wouldnt even come on. Turn off the truck and restart it, not a problem. WTF?! Anyways, looks like I will be purchasing a SCION H/U for a cheap upgrade! Plus, if you buy one new it still comes with a 12 month warranty! Oustanding!

yeah I think I heard that someone bought out MB's...that sucks if the quality went down...your not suppose to mess with things that arent broken...but oh well....still check them out and make a decision for yourself.

yes JL brand is also good speakers. I had their subs for long time...I didnt see anything wrong with them. Although I never had JL door speakers, but I imagine them to be just as good as their subs. good luck. Let us know what you pick and dont forget the pix.

The audio system I had before was made up of all mix and match components. Partially due to the lack of funds to buy everything at the same time.

JL subs
Kicker amps
Sony EQ

In theory, buying all the same brand would probably sound better because they are all from the same stock, but having different components lets you see how different brands hold up on their own as well.

Well I just got a T1807 off of Ebay NIB for $9.99 +$20 shipping! I also have the AUX cable that some guy was selling for $30. Cant wait to see how good the stock speakers sound!
