New TE strange Transmission noise on D/R when stopped

I have noticed that my new TE has a very strange grinding sound seems coming from transmission when shift leveler is in D or R position with brake applied(truck not moving).

The symptom is that when the truck is stopped with brake applied, then when shift from Park or Neutral to either Drive or Reverse, I can hear a loud grinding kind of noise for about 1 to 2 seconds then it quiets down.
One time two days ago the noise lasted much longer and it was very loud as I just pulled into my garage. The sound is more obvious when the transmission is warm as the the truck has been driven for a while.
The sound disappears as soon as the truck starts moving and it drives very smooth and no abnormal noise when driving.

I am wondering whether it is normal with this type of new transmission. As my 98 4R does not have that. And our 06 Odyssey do have a little sound like that in that situation but not that obvious.
Do others notice the same? - Thanks

One more thing, the sound can be heard easily with windows rolled down and some walls around like house garage and parking garage. Or standing outside of the truck. The loudness of the sound make me think that something is not working right.

I have a 2 month old TE with 2k miles and have not heard anything like you describe. I am assuming you don't have it in 4wd.

One more thing, the sound can be heard easily with windows rolled down and some walls around like house garage and parking garage. Or standing outside of the truck. The loudness of the sound make me think that something is not working right.

No, I am not in 4WD.
Actually, I just tested it today when the transmission is cold. Seems like it did not make the sound when it is cold. Only when it is warm.

Agree, seems like it tries to engage something but take some time.
My truck only has 300 miles and still in break in. I am wondering whether it is a break-in symptom. How many miles in yours?

There has been some change but not completely resolved. Let me explain.

Two weeks ago, when my TE put in Drive/Reverse in stationary is very loud some times with high pitch. It even can be heard in parking lot without walls around. But it did not happen every time. I searched the forum regarding noise and found some thread mentioning heat shield vibrating and some trucks had those sound disappeared by them self later on.

Then I went underneath the truck from the passenger door side to check the heat shields. There are many heat shields there, big and small. I touched some that I can reach. There is one small piece that just above my head around one of the u-joint I think. I tried to bend it as I think it was too close to the body frame.
Next day I drove my truck and checked the sound when stopping and it did not happen. For two weeks now, those loud grinding noise has not re-appeared. I am not sure whether bending the small heat shield fixed it or it just cured by itself. I suspect that the sound maybe fainted to a level that is not obvious. The reason I say that is when I put it to Drive/Reverse with windows rolled down, I can still hear grinding sound but it is not that loud anymore. It sounds like some bell jingling with low level sound. When I start to accelerate slowly, I will hear some more clear bell jingling sound only for a brief period of time. As the RPM ramps up, there is no more jingling sound.
That makes me think that there is still some vibration or resonance with some heat shields or other parts withing engine/transmission compartment that will cause sound when the gears are in load. If that is the case, I will not worry about it too much.

But I am not sure, as I can not reach engine compartments to check all lose parts. Also, I went under my truck the other day and noticed that there is a small heat shield piece that are attached to the torque converter (I think it is the TC as there are two aluminum colored tranny like housing, the one I saw is the front one). It is attached with two bolts. Guess what, it is loose and moves around. The bolts are tight just the piece is free to move. I tried to tight the nuts but it is hard to reach so I gave up. Not sure it is the one that causes the sound but I doubt it, because when I touched it, although it is loose, it did not sound like it.

That's the one that was rattling on mine. I would hear it when sitting in like a drive thru next to the wall and foot on brake and in drive. I could put it in Nuetral and it would stop.

It's like the piece or the bolts were designed wrong as it can't be tightened any more and it was real loose. It's a silver heat shield with 2 bolts on the drivers side just forward of the front cat. When I put DT headers on I just took it off.

It's not doing it right now so I haven't done anything yet. When it starts again, I'll start looking at the shields.

Did you hear your noise when vehicle stopped after driving for 20-30 mins or still driving?

I hear this noise as I am backing into my garage after I have taken it for a short drive. Very annoying sound. If it's in R and I barely let off the brake is when it's at its worst.

Seems the same symptom when I had those loud grinding noise. It usually happened when I out drove for a while and back home pulling into garage.
My commute is normally 20-30 mins and when came home, in garage, the sound was worst. Even my 8 years old asking "What is that sound?".

As I mentioned earlier, mine sound is no longer loud but still exists if pay attention. It sounds like vibration from metal piece.

Here is the picture of the heat shield that I bent a little bit. Not sure this cures the loudness. It is right underneath near driver door side.

The second picture is the heat shield that I think Harper7 had removed and it is really loose although with two bolts tightened.

I haven't been to the dealer. Maybe on my first scheduled maintenance I will bring this up to them. I am thinking maybe if they putting two larger washers will make the piece stable. Maybe worth a try.

If you or anyone try at dealership to stable that piece and make some sound differences, please let us know.
