New to forum - going to buy a lift kit

Hello all,

Well I have the 4runner (97 limited, elocker) and now I am going to lift it 3" and put 285/16 (thinking Pro comps) on..after that slowly start modifying.
I have read a bunch of these threads on lifting and I know that I want a good suspension. Will be doing some desert runs and don't want to be bouncing around for 2 days... Anway..

I was looking at the ultimate toy tech kit, then looked at the Sonora kit, do I really need all that.. I do know that I want coil overs in front, but I need to have all this done by June 15th..

Any recommendations would be great!

Welcome!!

I am sure you would be happy with either the Toytec or Sonoran kit, they are both big improvements, especially since you already have the locker. I have Toytec CO's in front, 890's in the back, and it has been a great setup. I sometimes wish I had gone with 891's in the rear, since I am usually loaded with gear.

Be sure to read the lift sticky, tons of great info. And check the classifieds, lots of great deals from others that are upgrading... Good luck!

Thanks... I might be trying to get this done too fast (we have a run in Calico June 15) and would like to have the lift and tires by then. Not sure I can gettr done, but would be nice.

When I get a chance I will start posting some before pics and then update from there.. I am excited, should be fun!

i would go with the toytec COs over the SS, setup. not that the SS set up is a bad set up, but then again its really nothing special. i will have the SS kit(but with adjustable bilstein struts and shocks) for under $500 by the end of the week buy searching around and spending some time figuring out where to get everything for less money, they are banking on the fact that they have everything all together in a one stop shopping kit... now toytec is kinda banking on the same deal, but with their fully adjustable coil overs, you can dial in the exact amount of lift and spring rate you want, its all 100% customizable by the user. and really for not that much more $$$ honestly i think its a much better deal and ever bit as good of a product if not a better one. my vote is for the toytec set up, but if money is no option then go with a total chaos long travel kit with either fox or icon coil overs... about $2-3k just for the front end, but it will be the best possible ride and suspension you can put under your 4runner for desert runs and trails

Awesome...was thinking that the ultimate kit for a grand was the way to go, and if I did anything Else I would regret it. Now, if I could afford the icon or fox I would go with that but just the front end, for Icons is 1200 buck, priced out this weekend..

Can someone recommend a cheap rim to put 285's on.. I was looking at a procomp, flat black and pre-show price @ 118 per wheel. If I could I would just run my stock rims, paint them flat black, but I don't think 285's will fit right?
The tires AT Extremes at 218.00

I need to check out a couple more tire shops like American Tires etc...

If you had more time you could piece together a setup with some rebuilt c/o's (King/Icon/ Sway-a-Way) for 1k. I've seen used but rebuilt c/o's on TTORA classifieds for <$500. I think you can get the Sway-a-Way 2.0 c/o's for around $700 new, so consider that if you can afford the Toytec ones. The Toytec ones aren't rebudable either, you have to buy new shocks but re-use the hardware.

Rear end is easier- just figure out what height you want & there is a coil for it between OME products and Land Cruiser 80 coils. You could put together a rear setup with new parts for around $300 if you do some research.

IMO I would go with the Coil overs up front and some LC coils out back. Its the best of both worlds. I run OME up front and LC out back. I love that setup also.

If it were only $2-3K I'd have that on my runner right now! I think it would end up being a little closer to $5K for a LT set up. The control arms alone are close to $2,000. Then you gotta get coil overs, and axles, and fenders, and jounce system. The list goes on and on!

sorry for the confusion, yeah i ment 2-3K for the total chaos parts, then yeah you have to buy the right CO to go with those as well(didnt include those prices as he would have to buy struts and springs no matter how you look at it)

Some great feedback.. I will post what I ended up getting by this weekend, and maybe some pictures I know that I am going with OME in the rear with 891's. Coils in the front with a 1" diff drop, for now.....

As far as wheels, I've noticed that there are a lot of people that are running 265's on their rigs, and then a lot of people running 285's..

I am being told that the 285's will do better... Get new wheels and sell the original rims and tires to get some money back, so I think I will be doing that..

German Shorthaired Pointer? I'm obviously a huge Pit Bull type dog fan but I love dogs in general. We have a 12 pound Chihuahua/Jack Russell mix who is a bad motherf*ck*r. He bosses my Pit Bull around like nobodies business. LOL.
