New to yota have some JBL Questions

I just bought a 2004 sport 4runner on saturday. It has JBL system in it with a single disc CD player. I have done a search on this system and want to put a newer JBL deck in. It looks like it should be plug and play. Will the newer system work with the rear contol and speaker set up of the 04. Thanks for any info.

My question is how good is this system. I do not think the sub is working because I have to turn the volume to about 45 but still not much from the sub just the mids. I have tried to tune it by turning down the mids but it just does not sound right to me.

I have a an 04 F150 with audiophile and it pumps pretty good. I also have a 99 Trans am with the monsoon and that pumps good with a aftermarket deck and single MTX.

I am expecting too much from the JBL?

Other than that I love the 4runner and was glad to find a forum for info on them. The ford is history as soon as I find a buyer.

I've put in a 2005 JBL system into my 2004 with JBL and everything still worked. Mine was a bit more complicated, but I went from a single disc to a 6 disc JBL. Do a search, I think someone put a 2006 JBL in their truck.

That rear sub sucks! I hardly get any bass out of it. I put in 2 10" subs powered by a Sony AMP to help out the low end. Otherwise, the JBL system is OK. It isn't great, but I'm no audiophile so YMMV.

The 6 disk JBL HU is plug and play but I'm not sure if it fits through the silver dash trim the same as what you have now. Have you tried turning the surround on/off?

Your sub is probably working fine but it is not strong at all. I had the 6disc Jbl and I gutted it and put in an avic-n3 using a Metra interface. I put 1 pioneer 12 inch sub in a box in my trunk and placed the pioneer amp under the driver seat. If you decide to upgrade to a six disc jbl system, you will find that it may be easier (and cheaper) to go aftermarket.

It will plug and play, but you are correct in thinking that it will not fit the bezel correctly. The single disc jbl and nav unit share the same bezel, but the 6 disc JBL unit uses a different bezel and climate control unit. Thanks for all of the info. So basicly the stock sub is crap. Can I put in a factory nav unit so I do not have to change the rest of the dash that will run my JBL or will I lose the surround sound option.

Would a aftermarket work the suround sound better than the JBL deck. I did a search and saw plenty of people who installed a aftermarket deck but no one said if the system sounded any better.

I have seen a sight on the net that sell the factory toyota nav units but it says they are for 2005 and up 4runner. Is the 05 different than the 04 JBL system.

Hi First - I just replaced my stock JBL 6-disc (premium sound w/amp and sub) head unit with a Kenwood DNX7100. I left all the other components (speakers, sub, amp) stock. The sound is 'not good'.

I will post a more detailed write up of my experience, but believe me...a new amp/sub/speakers are on the way. However, I do love the head unit..very slick!

I'll try to post that review later tonight.

FYI - I have the stock (2003 ltd) jbl 6-disc HU if anyone wants it..still works great.
