Obviously this head to head is just for fun and not to be taken too seriously. This certainly isn't meant to start a Jeep vs 4runner debate! I think it demonstrates the effect of the rear locker nicely.
My takeaways: Both vehicles could have benefit from airing down, lockers are a helpful tool that can allow a less rammy aproach to obstacles, even though they called it a draw we all know who was more comfortable going up those hills!, and good A/T tires are very important both in size and tread pattern.

My new 4Runner taking on a few rocks
My friend shot this during my Borrego trip a couple weeks ago -- my first opportunity to take the new 4Runner off-road. This was on the trail from the Diablo "drop off" into Fish Creek Wash, in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, CA. Nothing really gnarly, just going over and between some rocks in a narrow canyon:

I'm no seasoned driver by any means, buuuuut @1:30 I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to drive up to a rock, with a verticle face, stop, and then hit the gas in 4lo and expect results. Judging by the bounce back, it also appears as though the tires have not been aired down (just guessing). At that point all that is being accomplished is digging out the trail and making in harder for the next person. All of us have to start somewhere though. I'm probably just being picky.
But if you watched the 20 seconds before that, he goes up that rock easily with Atrac on. Then he tries the same maneuver at 1:30 (which you are criticizing) with no Atrac just to show us the difference. He wasn't digging on that rock expecting results, but demonstrating what is possible with and without Atrac.

Got off work early so decided to experiment a bit..
Need to decide on rear coils for when the SSS rear bumper arrives, so decided to put the stock coils through their paces to try and get a feel of how stiff I should go next..
Had an unloaded vehicle besides driver and half tank of gas.
Setup:
All tires BFG KO2 @40psi (265/70/r17)
6112 Bilstein front shocks with coils @0.85" setting
5160 Bilstein rear shocks with stock coils
Bumps 1 - 6 are flat topped shape like /—\
Sharp bumps are short and stubby, kind of like the ones you see in parking structures but slightly bigger..
Brick road ≈ small ruts
Alleyway ≈ larger ruts
Pretty cool to see things in action back there.
