Nitto Ridge Grappler?

3 mpg over...Highway tires???

If so that’s entirely expected from a hybrid tire.

Just mounted my 285/70-17 C-load up yesterday, just in time for a freak late spring snow. I’ll say, right off the bat, these performed nowhere near as good in the snow as either my Falken AT3W or BFG KO2. I know those are both mountain snowflake rated and these are not, but for Illinois I really didn’t think it was absolutely necessary to get the highest rated snow performance short of getting a dedicated tire.

I’m considering a new thread reviewing the three tires in performance since I now have experience with 3 of the most popular tires out there right now. I’m really hoping these do better in other aspects.

Maybe my pressure is too low? Installer set them at 34 and I haven’t played with the pressures yet.

I’ll say, what the RG lacks in snow performance it more than makes up for in off road capability. This is easily the best off road tire of the bunch.

They plowed right through some thick mud that had my truck sinking unbeknownst to me without even a hint of drama. I have 45 days to return them but if they keep up their off road prowess and good road manners (other than noise which is the loudest of the bunch) I may consider keeping them.

285/70-17 C Load

They look smaller than their actual size. This is confirmed by a lack of rubbing where my KO2s would.

Let them break in a little bit. Ive had mine on for a while now but the first rain I put them through they weren't the best. The snow we had Saturday here they were awesome. I will for sure be getting these again when its time. And i'm on 285/70/17

Thanks for the advice! I really wanna like them as much as everyone else does. I’m hoping you’re right. I have 45 days to see if they improve but I shouldn’t see snow again until the fall. Tough choice.

What pressure you guys running your 285s at? Installer did 34 and it looks way low. I’ll chalk test them but won’t have time for a few days still.

32 for me. My installer put them at 40 and I nearly lost a filling.

Haha. Thanks. I bumped up to 36. My contact patch looks okay. 34 just looked so low. I’m gonna try it for a little. I’ll report back once I can chalk line them.

It looks like Nitto did away with 265/70/17 in load C and going with a PT rated tire instead. This might be good for those looking for stock size but much lower weight and probably only good for very light offloading.

If you can see the difference between 34 and 36psi you have good eyes!

Haha. I was literally under the truck eyeing the tread blocks. I have OCD to a level little understood. At least I convinced myself I saw the difference but I really think I do.

^Thanks.

So not to whore this thread lately, but I have until midnight to decide if I want to change sizes before the Nitto deal expires on TireBuyer. Given the smaller appearance and less rub than I had with my KO2s, I’m strongly considering ordering 34s (285/75-17) but I’m a little torn. The tires are about 10 pounds heavier (sucks) and I really don’t want to do the BMC although I know many do. Just not interested in it.

Stay with the smaller tire is what I would suggest! That's even without talking body chops.

Thanks. I’m kind of leaning that way since I tow and that weight is going to be insanely noticeable.

285 70r17’s installed this morning on 2016TE, no rub on mud flap, and I had already modified my bumper

I keep reading that the RG gets “better” with mileage in terms of wet and snow traction. Can anyone with some mileage chime in?

I ordered load range E Falkens but I’m changing my order. I don’t want to make any drastic changes if this “change” in performance is widely reported. Thanks!

Just took my RGs off road one more time before giving them back. Went through a ton of mud to the point where another guy pulled up next to me and was all like, I can’t believe you didn’t get stuck...

Damnit RGs...why can’t you be better in the cold/snow? Killing me smalls.
