Hey guys,

I'm currently looking to buy a 01-02 sport 4runner and i was wondering....

1. Do these models come in Manual-Transmission?

2. What cylinders are optional when buying one? just 4-cylinders, 5-cylinders?
- I saw a 2001 sport for sale with 6-cylinder, Is that how it was built or did he mod it or somthing?

3. Should i make sure to buy a runner with 5-cylinder or is it really not that big of a deal between a 4 or 5 cylinder 4runner? Although I really want my 4runner to be high performance.

4. Is it rare to find a 01-02 sport Edition with 5 cylinders?

5. Does the amount of cylinders change the price around at all or no?

Thanks, as always....

As much DETAIL as you can give me guys really helps, really! TY!

But why not...

1. Do these models come in Manual-Transmission?
Automatic, I believe. 1999-2000 did have a manual option

2. What cylinders are optional when buying one? just 4-cylinders, 5-cylinders?
Up until 2000, 4Runners had a 4-cyl and 6-cyl option. the 4-cyl was discontinued after 2000.

3. Should i make sure to buy a runner with 5-cylinder or is it really not that big of a deal between a 4 or 5 cylinder 4runner? Although I really want my 4runner to be high performance.
The obvious difference is the size....as anyone who owns a 4runner will tell you, the 6-cylinder 3400 is not a speed demon....so needless to say, the 4-cylinder is definitely not. There is, however, the dealer-installed supercharger option that gains you some hp.

4. Is it rare to find a 01-02 sport Edition with 5 cylinders?
As stated above, the 4runner came with 6-cylinder and 4-cylinder options. Are you possibly confusing "5-speed" (in reference to the transmission) with the engine? If not, then there may have been an engine swap at some point....The only 5-cyl I know of produced by Toyota in recent history was the 1PZ Diesel inline 5-cylinder engine for the Land Cruiser 70 series...

5. Does the amount of cylinders change the price around at all or no?
There are a ton of factors in pricing, but most of us here would probably value the 6-cylinder engine higher. Obviously, from truck to truck, there are more desirable features you'd pay more for (ie, superchargers)

See above post; edited for your questions

Wow i think i was getting confused.

So is 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder refering to the engine size?

Is the following correct?:

4 cylinder gets better gas milage

6 cylinder has more power

6 cylinder more exspensive?

And my whole post i guess was refering to 5 speed.

Do you think you could answer all my questions as if i was asking them concerning the "5-speed"

Like is there 4 and 5 speeds only? or is there others?

Which is better?

Is there a price difference?

Is the following correct?:

4 cylinder gets better gas milage Correct, but not by leaps and bounds...maybe 2-3 mpg

6 cylinder has more power Correct

6 cylinder more exspensive? Correct, unless someone REALLY wants a 4-cylinder...but again, other factors on individual vehicles, like mileage and fun options, are also a consideration....obviously, a 4-cylinder Runner with 50k miles on it would be worth more than a 6-cyl with 175k

Do you think you could answer all my questions as if i was asking them concerning the "5-speed"

Like is there 4 and 5 speeds only? or is there others? As far as manual transmissions, only a 5-speed was available, and was discontinued after 2000.

Which is better?
Which transmission is "better" is really more of a personal preference. There are some advantages the manual has over the auto; the biggest (as far as a 4runner is concerned) is the absence of the "Strawberry Milkshake" scenario that the automatic transmission can experience. Either transmission, as long as its cared for, will last quite a long time. Same with the engines.

Is there a price difference?
There can be. 5-speed 4runners are more desirable, so people are willing to shell out a bit more...but again, other factors do play in to this.

Hey guys,

I'm currently looking to buy a 01-02 sport 4runner and i was wondering....

1. Do these models come in Manual-Transmission? No, '01-'02 were only available with automatic transmissions

A 4 cylinder was available in '96-'00 Base model 4Runners. 6-cylinder engines were in SR5 and Limited models. A 5-cylinder engine was never offered in a 4Runner

3. Should i make sure to buy a runner with 5-cylinder or is it really not that big of a deal between a 4 or 5 cylinder 4runner? Although I really want my 4runner to be high performance.

No 5-cylinder 4Runners. No 4Runner will ever be considered high performance. Although the closest would be a 4th gen V8, with a TRD Supercharger.

4. Is it rare to find a 01-02 sport Edition with 5 cylinders?
Extremely rare, Since Toyota never built any.

5. Does the amount of cylinders change the price around at all or no?

Probably. A Base 4-cylinder would've been a less expensive vehicle when new, so it stands to reason they are worth less than a higher optioned V6 SR5 or limited.

Just curious, how old are you?

5 speed were only offered from 96-00 and available with 4 and 6 cylinder engines. They were less mass produced so they are more rare and will require a higher price tag and search timeframe typically. Since you stated in another thread that you want a 02 Sport, then you will not be able to purchase a 5 speed. The other option is the 4 speed automatic transmission that was offered 96-02.

5 speeds and autos vary in price and neither is more expensive per se. Some people price 5 speeds higher because of their rarity, but not always the case. In regards to which is better, that is subjective for each person. 5 speeds are more fun for me to drive, but not practical for my lifestyle at this time. It just depends on the person and I'm assuming you have never driven a 5 speed before...

I appreciate your enthusiasm, but please do some research before posting every thought that comes to your mind. I'm not trying to be harsh, but this info is covered in the above linked thread and plastered across this site if you search a bit. If you still have specific questions then ask away.

Wow i think i was getting confused.

So is 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder refering to the engine size? No, it's referring to the number of cylinders an engine has. However, the 4-cylinder 3RZ-FE DOES have less displacement than the 6-cylinder 5VZ-FE

Is the following correct?:

4 cylinder gets better gas milage Yes

6 cylinder has more power Yes

6 cylinder more exspensive? Yes

And my whole post i guess was refering to 5 speed.

Do you think you could answer all my questions as if i was asking them concerning the "5-speed"

Like is there 4 and 5 speeds only? or is there others? The automatic transmissions are 4-speeds. The manual transmissions are 5-speeds.

Which is better? Personal preference. I prefer the responsiveness of the V6 engine with a 5-speed manual transmission.

Is there a price difference? The manual transmission equipped 4Runners seem to be harder to find, so they might command a premium, if the seller knows what they have.

Thanks very much,

But also,
1. Are you saying after 2000, they stopped with the 5-speed?

2. So for 01-02 you can only get a 4-speed?
(And the difference between a 4 or 5-speed is just the different amount of mph's, until it swithes to a higher gear?)

3. I drive a 1998 manual 4runner at the moment, Is it 5-speed, because i can shift from first gear to fifth gear? ( If that is correct, wouldnt a 4- speed not be able to go as fast? at fourth gear in my manual 4runner, i only use it for 35-50mph.)

4. And in the 01-02 4runners its still between the choice of a 4 or 6 cylinder engine correct?

5. So if all this is correct, my choices in a 01-02 sport 4runner, would be:
4-speed, 4 cylinder engine,
4-speed, 6 cylinder engine

BY THE WAY:
I am 18 years old, I never have been into vehicles to this year 2014. I have found the fun and joy in 4runner's specifically, but also just learning about a vehicle and doing amazing mods on it, and making the vehicle just look special and unique.

I would love a 01-02 black sport, all decked out.
But also a TRD PRO 2015.

But for now i gotta keep it cheap :P

2. So for 01-02 you can only get a 4-speed?
(And the difference between a 4 or 5-speed is just the different amount of mph's, until it swithes to a higher gear?)AUTOMATIC, , Which I guess could be considered a 4 speed.

( If that is correct, wouldnt a 4- speed not be able to go as fast? at fourth gear in my manual 4runner, i only use it for 35-50mph.) Yes. But there were NO 4 gear 4Runners made. Automatics I guess are considered 4speed with OverDrive, but that's something completely different. There is NO MANUAL 4 Speed.

4. And in the 01-02 4runners its still between the choice of a 4 or 6 cylinder engine correct? YES

5. So if all this is correct, my choices in a 01-02 sport 4runner, would be:
4-speed, 4 cylinder engine, AUTOMATIC
4-speed, 6 cylinder engine AUTOMATIC

Just an FYI. Post #3 in the link provided above would have answered nearly all your questions. You don't need to be a car guy to understand it either. It even has this nifty chart that explains you transmission and other important options.

I would do a lot more research to find out what you actually want/need. Being 18 you'll have quite a learning curve, but don't let that discourage you. 4runner's can be expensive if you fix it the right way, and cheap if you don't. Well, it's cheap until those cheap parts fail and then you have an expensive fix. Inherently smaller engines get better gas mileage, and have less power.

Yep every one knows that the 5 cylinder 02 sport with the 4 speed manual is the best option. Im sure you can find one in the sub $100 range as well.

im a dick haha

Don't forget they came in 2WD and 4WD versions. I am seeing really cheap prices for 2WD 4Runners because they are not generally desirable by most who want an off road capable vehicle. The easy way to tell up to 2002 4Runners is there is a second stick shift. Or a stick shift plus and automatic shifter. Good luck.

AUTOMATIC, , Which I guess could be considered a 4 speed.

Just for the sake of clarity, there are 4 gear ratios in the A340 Automatic transmission. So there is no guessing involved, it is a 4-speed transmission.

OP, as I already typed, the 4-cylinder engine was no longer available after the year 2000. Also the '01-'02 4Runners only were available with automatic transmissions. So if you get a '01-'02 model, it will be a V6 engine with auto transmission. The only drivetrain variable would be whether it has 4wd or not.

Haha, Looking back at this makes me laugh. I had the dumbest questions. But i mean if you have never been around vehicles or grown up being taught what parts are what and what not, alot of people have no idea. But all of you on this forums have taught me so much, and now i know a good amount of knowledge concerning vehicles especially 4runners.
Thanks alot guys!
