Normal/high transmission temperatures?

So I installed the Scangauge II this weekend and programmed it to show the Tranny temp (initial impressions of the Scangauge vs. Ultragauge will be posted later this week.)

My question is, now that I know the tranny temp, what should I be watching out for as far as high temps? When I left the house this morning it was around 75 - 80, and by the time I got to work (12 miles) it was about 125 or so.

When you first start it, the trans temp should be at ambient air temp (or close). Did you bypass your radiator completely when you installed your B&M cooler? If so, you'll see temps rise into the 120-180 range, depending on what you're doing, and the ambient air temp. With my set up completely bypassed, I've never seen it above 200, and during the summer it stays in the 140-170 range, which I think is ideal. In the winter, it might not get above 110, depending on how cold it is and the duration of the drive.

I agree with Qyota's numbers except that I have seen the temps go over 200 a few times on slow curvy uphill mountain roads. It never stays above 200 for long so it doesn't bother me.

Well, I'll be pulling a trailer up 3 passes on Friday. Highest will be 10,000' above sea level (Kenosha Pass.) Will be interesting to see what happens to trans temp.

Keep it out of OD if it wants to continually shift. The shifting is what really brings the temp up in these situations.

I haven't read through the owner's manual but IIRC OD is supposed to be off when towing.

I don't know if it actually says that but I always put the OD in the off position when towing a trailer, even my lightweight cargo trailer, just to be on the safe side.

I have the 70268 (yes it is installed correctly) bypassing the radiator with a fair amount of armor and I think the main problem is the 7" PIAA light i have on the shockworks bumper which kinda blocks airflow to it, but nonetheless at 50 degree ambient temp my trans if i drive it hard on the highway hangs between 190-235.......Probably going to gamble and route it back through the radiator as that's just too hot.....Numbers are using the scan guage II

is there a problem to just add another 70268 on the other side of the radiator? My only concern if there isn't sufficient pressure to "push" the fluid through two coolers? Anyone running that setup?

Your looking at anywhere from 180-200+ depending on the road and or if towing. Its just another thing to worry about, another reason I dont care about trans temps unless I was always towing.

highest I've ever seen mine b&m 70268

I was towing a loaded trailer for awhile today (80+ degrees)and the transmission temp never got over 175. However when I went to back my trailer uphill and up my driveway. (Very inexperienced with trailers, first time backing one up ever,and just wanted to try it out.) It took me awhile to get it going up straight into my driveway which is a pretty steep incline. I noticed my transmission had went from 175 to 236 Which kind of scared me. Thankfully before it could get any hotter I got it up my driveway and into position. Anyways I unhooked the trailer and went out to eat and my transmission immediately went down to 200 degrees and slowly back down to the 170 and below range.

Most people have the B&M cooler. I have a Hayden TRD one. I just got my scanguage and drove to PHX which is about 1.5 hours one way, and 6% grades in several places. Got up to about 220 on the way up towing a trailer. I have full synthetic in my tranny, so that helps a ton as far as oil breakdown.

Sent my tranny fluid into Blackstone and it was perfect, no signs of abnormal wear or oil breakdown. Fluid was very red that I took out.

I see about 185-195, more around 195 and when in fifth gear ( overdrive) she will jump to about 208. All I need to do is downshift into fourth and instantly drops down to the low 90's
