What type of range can i expect from the factory remote start?
It has the smart key system, should i get it or go for aftermarket?
Your thoughts please!

Minimal. I don't have the smart key system but my factory remote start only works within maybe 50yrds if I am within sight distance of the vehicle, most of the time I have to be closer.

Its not the most intuitive design, the remote start process has you lock the doors, and when they are unlocked it shuts the engine off. In other words you have to shut off the engine by opening a door, then get in and start with a key.

Hope that info helps.

I was told at purchase that the OEM remote starter was not very good, and the dealership had complaints. They instead installed a third party 2 way system and works great. Was part of the deal. I couldn't actually say the OEM is no good-took their word for it.

I had a third party starter installed made by Audiovox and it was a piece of ****. Didn't work half the time and was recalled. Now I have the toyota oem remote starter and works alot better.

I have the oem remote and the range is not as bad as I was told. The remote start works great as long as you have the vehicle in sight, and you don't need a second fob for the oem starter.

I got OEM and really great on winter days!

It runs for 10 minutes and then shutdown the engine (doors locked). If you want to get in within 10 minutes, the engine shut-off once you unlock the doors.

Other than the engine kill when the doors are opened, I have no issues with mine. Turn the heat on high the night before, and its toasting and defrosted when I get in when Im ready for work.

WOuld be great if they could incorporate the windshield wiper heater into it.

I have an aftermarket alarm/remote start (Viper). Good product and the range is outstanding.
The drawback is carrying around the remote attached to the key. I would much prefer to just have the key with functions built in.
Again, the range of the Viper is pretty darn good.
I have also programmed fob/4R to roll up or down windows (incl. sunroof) when arming/disarming, unlock one or all doors, etc.
Remote start run time varies on how I program. Right now I have the runtime at 25 minutes (I think I can go down to 10 min and up to 60 min). If needed I can add more time from the fob while the system is running. I can also have the 4R start and stop itself at certian time intervals (maybe for those who lives in extreme temps? But I have no use).
Anyhow there are many different features that I can program myself vice paying the dealership to do it for me.
So, in that case, I say its a compromise.
