OEM Brake Prices!!

Holy cow!

Just called local, El Paso, Toyota for OEM wheel cylinders and brake shoes.

Wheel Cylinder $78 each
Shoes $145 set of 4

That is crazy! Over $300 for parts! I can get aftermarket for less than $50. I don't mind paying 2x or 3x but 6x or 7x does not sound like a good deal…

Any good online for OEM Toyota? I found one but did not have a good listing and it was unclear which parts I need from them.

Also is a disc brake modification doable? I'd drop $300 on that…

I just did my entire rear brake assembly on my wife's '01 last weekend. I got all parts from O'reilly's and Napa. Had to get a few items from Toyota due to a strange discrepancy. Anyway, here's a list:

NAPA has a set NAPA Ultra Premium Brake Parts for the same price as china made Autozone but special order. I was told they buy from various sources so can be the same china made as Autozone or Mexico, Taiwan or USA..can't tell till they arrive….

Oreilly in El Paso was the same story with made in china the only option.

Any other choices out there?

In my opinion, they're rear brakes. The aftermarket parts work just fine. I don't skimp on the front. TBU 231's and nothing else. The front brakes do most of the work. As long as the rear ones aren't locked from the E-brake bell cranks seizing up, I'm fine with whatever country the parts are from.

did you try camelback toyota parts or village toyota. They sell OEM but they are still not very cheap.

I replaced my 02 4runner front pads with AutoZone Gold Super sumpin garbage in a box pads and they are actually OK.
I replaced my wife's 07 Highlander with O'Reiley's Super wizbang ceramic no shim necessary uber coated pads and they squeeeeeeel so friggin loud that I wanna shoot something. (and yes, I coated them with lube)

OK,

I found some NAPA wheel cylinders and installed those. Waiting for drums to be turned so not done yet BUT…

As I removed the old OEM WC's when I disconnected the brake line the first one was under a LOT of pressure! The fluid squirted out violently! The 2nd side was not pressurized so I surmise the pressure was on the entire rear brake system.

SO…is that normal? I have never seen this before and replaced a lot of drum brakes over the years.

IS there a check valve somewhere that is causing this?

Any ideas?

Kinked brake line upstream?? Or just a sever case of not having been bleed in over a century, lol.

Did you try pumping the brakes to see if fluid eventually comes out that dry corner?

Haha,

Nope, I've ran 2 liters of clean brake fluid through the system. It flows smoothly. Was able to bleed the brakes and complete the job this evening with all new parts. Neither side had an issue.

Once again the shoes had tightened up on the drum, not to the point of heating but I had to work to remove them. All that in about 100 miles of driving-mostly fwy.

The wheel cylinder came apart smoothly with no noticeable issues, did not appear to have any leaks or burs but if it was holding that pressure no surprise it jammed the shoes…

STill looking for answers if anyone has one or 2.
