OEM Mudflaps with Auto Running Boards

Just finished installing the OEM mudguards on my 2012 with automatic running boards.

Gentlemen, the modification necessary to accomplish this installation is a 2 on a scale from 1-10. (The only reason I haven't given it a 1 is because you need tools; 1s are reserved for changing a light bulb or pushing a button :thumb3: )

Tools needed:

5mm allen wrench
4mm allen wrench

Anyway, you will need the 5mm allen wrench to remove the four allen screws which hold each running board to the hangars which actually deploy them.

After you've removed the boards from the hangar, you'll need a 4mm allen wrench to loosen two metal squares which hold a metal bar in place at each hangar attachment point. Once these 4mm allen screws are loosened, you'll be able to slide the running boards back and forth as desired.

To install OEM mudguards, you'll need to push back the running boards so that they sit flush with the front of the rear fender wells.

Installation is the reverse of removal.

Howdy everyone,

I'm new here (first post). I've been lurking for about a week or so reading up on various subjects. I recently traded in my 2011 Evo X for a 2012 Limited 4x4. (An upcoming career change necessitated a different ride.)

Anyway, this isn't our first 4Runner though. We used to own a 2001 SR5 with sport package that we only recently sold a year or two ago.

Here's my question. (I apologize in advance if it's been posted/asked before but my initial searches turned up nothing.)

Can the OEM mudflaps be installed with the auto-deploying running boards without modification?

and many more except these are with the fixed running boards. I suggest you measure your running boards while extended and see if there is room.

I don't think any of us are sure unless there is someone else with a '12 and auto-boards with mudflaps. You should only have to worry about the front wheel flaps hitting if anything. The OEM flaps come about 1-1/2-2" back from the front of the lower rocker if that helps.

ps: I know quite a few of us are curious about the auto-boards, so details, pics, where they connect, any new buttons etc. would be some good info if you want to start another thread on that. :biggrin2:

Yes, the OEM mud flaps will fit with the powered running boards. I removed the running boards from the hangers with an allen wrench (don't recall the size). There is four holding each board. Once you remove the boards install the front mud flaps. Flip the running board over and you'll notice another allen screw holding the brackets on the board. Loosen it and slide the brackets forward about 1.5" to allow the running board to be mounted further back. Mount the running boards back on the hangers and test for clearance. The boards should be perfectly even with the rear door. They should have come from the factory this way! The dealer told me the front ones won't fit because of where the factory mounted the running boards. I told them to just give me the mud flaps and I'll do it!

It is nice because it is tucked away so most people don't know it is there until the door is opened. You can also switch it off if you do not want to use it.

Nice rig southman! I have the same LTE with the auto running boards and I must say they're growing on me. I never wanted them in the beginning, but my dealership only ordered the '12 LTE with them, so I didn't have a choice really. However I must say, they're pretty slick. When retracted, they're tucked under flush and you can hardly see them. As soon as you open a door, they deploy at just the right amount of speed and timing to step on or off. According to the user's manual, if the boards encounter obstructions in front or behind them, they'll stop (I forget if they'll move in the opposite direction) to clear the object. And yup, they can be turned off by the switch inside. They feel solid and rigid with the rest of the vehicle. In my humble opinion, I never really cared for the look of the fixed running boards, except for the Canadian type, because they appear to thick and detached from the body. So when I first saw the new auto boards at my dealership, I thought these looked promising.

Bottom line, I enjoy having them on... $1500 well spent??.... eh, the more I use them, the better I feel about it. haha People have also been complimenting on how "cool" they look going in and out. Lol...

Does anyone know how to post a video? I'll take a video later tonight of its operation and try to post it, unless someone else has one. That'll probably be the BEST way to describe them without going to a dealership.
