OEM Steering Wheel Swaps

Hunted around here and Tacoma World...can't seem to find much. Knowing how Toyota likes to make their trucks like Legos, I'm wondering if anyone knows if you can directly swap a Tacoma steering wheel into the 4Runner.

I dislike my '06 4Runners wheel because it's just kinda dated, and I miss the wheel from my '15 Tacoma.

Obviously, you'd have to swap the airbag as well. Does anyone know if the wiring harnesses for the controls would plug & play, for cruise control (the operation of the switch between my two Toyotas is exactly the same) and music volume?

Did this last weekend. Took all of 5 minutes, minus battery time. Switched out the cruise from the new Taco wheel, harness issue with OEM clockspring. Audio connectors from the wheels are different, so it will require a little metering and soldering, etc., but it should be not too difficult. Just a time, hunt and peck thingy.
Airbag connectors are the same, as is ground/horn wire, but I chose to leave out the airbag for now. No faith in the Tockico crap.
Anyway, it's a straight and easy swap. Got mine off an ebay salvage, still connected to the column, which I had them remove. Oh, and it cost $230, plus shipping. Cheap, and I love the feel of this wheel over the stock by a huge amount.
IF audio controls are the only thing holding people back, well...figure it out you brainy electrical wizards. I know I'll do it sometime. Didn't do this before because my attention and money was directed towards my yamaha's, and my daughter. Cheers, G

I too went from a Tacoma (2014) to my 2006 runner and am loving it. I did not miss the steering wheel but went with one from a GX

Wow! Nice work, but steering wheel controls mean too much for me. Also, getting a recall fixed airbag would be a major concern for me.
 
Here is mine. I bought the wheel off ebay and the phone switches online at Toyota Parts Deal or something like that. Completely plug and play with the radio. It's the same wheel out of the 4Runner Trail Edition. Initial feel was still a little plasticky, but has gotten better and is much better looking for the sport interior.

Well, the audio controls are doable, you just need to work at it. Since the original buttons worked with my new head unit, the same should be true for the new buttons. Just a bit of splicing, etc., will get you there. I just need a saturday afternoon to fix it. Meter, shrink tubes, solder and it's all good. I have no doubts.
As to the airbag, well I've had one deployed and it's wonderful, but I don't worry driving without one. To each their own, and I may install one later....after they've finished with their screw ups. Cheers, g

PS Also, my response (on this thread) was a direct answer to CSEAMAN, who asked if a Taco wheel could be matched up with a 4runner. Answer, yes. Everything else is meaningless, or I would have posted this elsewhere. #3 & 5 have no real place here and do not belong. Read #1, tell me I'm wrong.

I read somewhere (and I cant remember now of course) that the RAV4 steering wheel can be used on a 4runner.

Can anyone confirm this?

I'm looking for a smaller, tri-spoke steering wheel with an airbag.

Any ideas?
 
This makes me want to go swap steering wheels with they wife's Rav4 to confirm!

But I do prefer the thicker steering wheel of the 4Runner. Feels more appropriate given the size compared to the Rav.

My other ride is a WRX STI. the small steering wheel on that makes the 4R wheel feel gigantic. haha
 
Was just wondering did you ever get the air bag hooked up as well as any of the steering wheel controls? I was looking at doing this swap

Not doing the airbag. Don't trust them right now. Hooked up Mode control and ground only. Too OCD with everything else, so I'll do the rest once my carport is rebuilt with electrical and lighting. No hurry, I know some of them already work. Alligator clips and hit or miss connections got a few before I stopped and left it alone.

Thanks for getting back to me. I found a base model 2016 tacoma wheel for 99 that has audio controls and bluetooth only. I think I'm going to pull the trigger and get it. Most of the wires between the two look almost exactly the same.

Yeah will do! the steering wheel I bought was from the base model so it has the same controls as the 4th gen steering wheel including the bluetooth controls. It should be relatively simple. I went ahead and ordered an airbag as well along with a oem like leather wrap that will have to be sewed on. I'll update as soon as I can! The airbag was not cheap haha so hopefully it works.
