so should i have the 4 bolts off before i try to remove the ball joint taper part?

what if i put the wheel back on, and then thread the castle nut 90% back and and lower the tire down, would that losen it.

im kindof stuck now because autozone is closed and i just have my bike, kind of hoping to swap this tonight.

no, pop it loose, then the shock will drop down and inch or so and hang there. then you can take the 4 bolts off and remove the ball joint.

no dice. im going to have to get over to the lab somehow and mill out the puller to have a bigger gap.

Camelback Toyota doesn't have an option for the 4 bolts so I'm going to assume they come with the Ball Joints.
Should I have ordered the castle nut? I didn't see that on the first page of this thread.

I would get new ones just because you can never know in what shape they will come out, I guess. They are 3$ a piece. And I don't think the bolts come with the lbj, because they are sold separately here;

Can you post the link you are using on camelback toyota?



Also, any ideas regarding a "LBJ Dust Cover"? It is a 14$ piece and why not if it would get me some extra miles.

I ordered mine from Camelback a few months ago and they did NOT come with new bolts, but they did come with a new castle nut, cotter pin and the joint already has the rubber boot installed.

Actually I had the part# but couldn't find how to order online from Camelback Toyota. Because when you google them, you land on their main website(Toyota Dealer Phoenix | Arizona New & Used Cars | Phoenix Toyota Service), which doesn't seem to have a way to get to their parts store.

I would recommend if you replace the 4 lower bolts go with oe. 2 of the new ones fell out and the other 2 were bent and they had all been loc tighted and torqued to spec, I just put the old bolts back in and haven't run into any issues so far

The 1996 Toyota 4Runner maintenance manual says the bolts are reusable. I'd rather have used OEM bolts than new ones from other vendors.

Same here, I just got my lower ball joints from Camelback a couple weeks ago. I ordered new bolts from them. I think they were $.79 each. I don't think I could get them that cheap at any of the hardware stores.

Lower Ball Joints -- new or old?

Hi - first, let me thank everyone on this forum for your great insights. You have helped me buy my first Toyota 4Runner -- a 3rd generation 1999 4Runner Limited, with 160,000 miles on the V6 engine. It has the locking rear differential and all the other goodies. I've had it 4 days and just love it.

I have most of the service records from the life of the vehicle and everything is looking good -- except, I don't see any mention of the Lower Ball Joints, and these photos scare me.

So, here is a photo of one of the LBJs (this one is the right side). I think I understand that Toyota came out with a new improved version of the lower ball joint -- I'm not sure which is on here, the old scary version or the new safer version. Can any of you help me identify this?

They're all the same afaik. Yours look to be leaking a little. Keep an eye in them and replace when you get the chance.

So there is no redesign that I am aware of. I have heard (now that's still speculation) but the Tacoma ball joints are stronger.

Yes the boot is leaking a small amount, nothing to be real worried about.

On the first page I have a description of how to check your ball joints. I would advise you do that and see if there is any play.

Thank you -- just wondering however, you mention the "leaking" as a symptom of wanting to change the ball joint, but the photos I've seen have been catastrophic failure of the metal casting itself -- the arm, not the joint... or am I mistaken?

Tacoma ball joints are identicle in the area that can fail (the ball joint itself). They are thicker / stronger where the tie-rod attaches which does not fail. Also, if you upgrade to tacoma LBJ's, you have to change to tacoma outer tie rods. And... you loose some turn radius. So overall, not a worthwhile upgrade.

You don't need the tool. Just if there is any play think about replacing them. You will feel it "clunk clunk" when you pry on the suspension.
