Hey dark runner why dont we test that with bt216's runner or roams001's runner against an older runner and see who gets disgraced? the new ones would kick a$$ because of raw power and torque under the hood. 2003-2009 4runner 4.0L 236 HP 266lb-ft torque and a 4.7L 260HP 306lb-ft torque. what do 3rd gens have... oh yea a weak little 183HP engine with 217lb-ft torque. who do u think would make it out of a steep creek bed or up a slippery rock ledge? in fact make that any 4th gen with a lift and 4x4 against any 3rd or 2nd gen with a lift and 4x4.(same amount of lift) dont get me wrong i respect the old ones but i think u need to lay off a bit at the older ones being the best. u might hurt someones feelings that just bought a new one. and u have to admit that the new ones are capable off road u might just be mad cause they look better and have more power and more room. First of all I'm not saying that the 4th gens arent offroad capable at all, I was comparing them to the older gens.
Power isnt everything when it comes to offroading. what can you do with all that power when your vehicle weighs so much? The 4th gens weigh just over 4500lbs. Thats 1000lbs more than the 3rd gens. Not to mention their overall size makes them difficult to maneuver on tight trails, on top of their terrible turning radius compared to a 3rd gen, they don't stand a chance.
A good offroading vehicle has good gear ratios. I was out wheeled by an 86 Toyota pickup with a 22re but he had dual transfer cases and his final drive was a 5:56. And the one thing that will always make the 3rd gen dominate the 4th gen (stock) is the electronic rear locker.
oh and fyi, my "weak little engine" puts 240hp down at the rear tires and I have smoked many 4th gens with V8s, and I've spent about half as much $ as a 4th costs. I'm sorry bud but I dont think you know the first about wheelin.

I believe the 03-05 V8's were around 260 whereas the 06+ are a little less. Either way, with the amount of torque we have, that's hardly lethargic.

You'd be surprised how capable a 2WD 4Runner is.

For many years, I drove a Toyota Pickup with the 150 H.P. V6, five speed manual tranny, standard 4.56 gears and of course, dual transfer case with 31 inch Michelin LTX M&S and Bilsteins.

Suffice it to say, I made it to places here in Colorado and in the west that many 4th generation 4Runners could only dream of going to.

And I drive a 4th Gen V8!

It's all in the gearing, vehicle clearance and driver experience that can get trucks and SUV's to places in real off-road conditions.

The older Toyota pickups with simpler design clearances, under-powered four bangers and small V6's shine brightly when it comes to off road capability.

The newer Tacomas and 4Runners have a lot of stuff hanging over their body and the widths and body parts kind of inhibit these excellent off road capable vehicles from the nimble climbing prowess of the earlier Toyota pickups.

No, he is right. The 03-05 4Runner V8 puts out 235 hp and 320 lb torque. The V6 puts out 245 hp and 282 lb torque. I am reading this info. straight from Toyota brochures.

The 06-09 4Runner V8 puts out 260 hp and 306 lb torque. The V6 puts out 236 hp and 266 lb torque.

Now remember, The government changed requirements on how hp is rated. I believe this was in 06 or 07.

Please check the specs if you’re going to compare the 3rd gen and 4th gen 4Runners. I happen to have brochures for both a 2002 (3rd gen) and 2003 (4th gen) 4Runner in my house, so I had to look at them after reading your claim that the 4th gens are 1000 lbs more than the 3rd gens. That just didn’t seem right to me. After looking at the specs for each vehicle, it turns out most of your claims were wrong.

While it is true that the 4th gen is larger than the 3rd gen, the difference is not really very significant. The ’03 4Runner is 189.0” in length, compared to 183.3” for the ’02. So it’s only 6 inches longer. As for width, the ’03 is 73.8” wide, compared to the 70.9” for the ’02 with factory fender flares (models without the factory flares are slightly narrower), again not a significant difference in size.

Turning diameter is actually better on the 4th gen over the 3rd gen. The ’03 has a turning diameter of 36.7’, compared to 38.1’ for the ’02. So to say the 4th gen has a terrible turning radius compared to the 3rd gen is just completely false.

Curb weight difference is not nearly what you claimed. An ’03 SR5 with 4wd and V6 engine weighs in at a curb weight of 4280 lbs. An ’02 SR5 with 4wd and V6 weighs in at a curb weight of 4115 lbs. That’s only 165 lbs heavier for the ’03. In fact, the heaviest version of the ’03 is a Sport Edition with 4wd and V8 engine, which weighed in at 4450 lbs, which is still only 335 lbs more than the ’02. So where did you get a 1,000 lb difference?

First u need to get your facts straight and second how much money did it take for u to put in that engine to get 240??? an a$$ load. lets see u probably put a 250 intake anywhere from 300 to 1200 exhaust, possibly new headers (expensive) u might as well have thrown that money away cause i know damn well i would smoke u at a drag strip. and even if i have only 235hp that also reaches that at 4,500 RPM for u to get to your 240 might take to about 5,700 RPM. Hmmmm and at least mine doesnt sound like a toy when u put on gas

Do you know anything about cars? TRD Supercharger $1200, URD 7th injector kit $600 (used), URD 2.1" S/C Pulley $130, DIY intake $Free And Doug Thorley full exhuast $700 again used. So that's roughly $2600 in upgrades + $9200 for my 4runner $11,800 total. How much was your 4runner? And by the way thats 240hp at the WHEELS!!! which means probably close to 300hp at the crank, not to mention I only have to turn 2 wheels instead of 4. You're an idiot, I'm done talking to you.

No offense, but these numbers are taken directly from Toyota's brochure:

2002 SR5 V6 4WD - curb weight 4115 lbs
2003 SR5 V6 4WD - curb weight 4280 lbs
2003 SE V8 4WD - curb weight 4450 lbs (that 's the heaviest version of the '03 4Runners)

So I'm not sure where you're getting your numbers, but regardless they do not match up well with Toyota's own numbers.
