Just to help the 4th gen owners:

As a 4th gen owner, you can always argue this...you canNOT add ATRAC to a 3rd gen 4runner with rear locker, BUT you can indeed add a rear locker (ARB for example) to a 4th gen 4runner with ATRAC. Or you can simply get the 2009 4runner Trail Edition and have the best of both worlds instantly from the factory.

Therefore, the rear (+/- front) locker can be added to a 4th gen 4runner...so, the lack of a rear locker can easily be fixed by aftermarket parts (or by getting a 2009 TE). But ATRAC (and the other safety benefits that come with it) canNOT be added to a 3rd gen 4runner (prior to 2001)...in other words, ATRAC cannot be retrofitted to an older vehicle that came without it from factory.

Additonal benefit of 4th gen over 3rd gen: REAR DISC BRAKES with true 4-channel ABS system. I hate drums brakes for off-roading, esp. if you go mudding or stream fording! It is an additional hassle that is not needed if you have disc brakes. (BTW, starting in 2001, 3rd gen 4runners also had 4-channel ABS, but still had rear drums.)

4th gens are just so much more comfortable to be in...that should be a big enough reason among all else!

Well, i don't see how it can be anymore capable than the 2009 Trail Edition. The Trail Edition for the 5th gen has KDSS and CRAWL. CRAWL is no substitute for a locker. KDSS is nice, but extra hardware underneath around the axle means more things to go bump over a rock and break/leak.

I'd easily take a 4th gen '09 TE specifically but can't afford a new one now but my '99 is paid off and only has 150k so by the time I tire of my '99 then the '09 will have come down in price and I may move to a 4th gen but I'm looking forward to the 5th gens hitting the streets and trails.

Well, in addition to the KDSS and CRAWL, Toyota is telling us that the ground clearance it going to increase. Plus, I believe the tires are going to be a bit bigger as well. The one official picture Toyota released sure makes it look like the 5th gen is all about offroad. But who knows for sure at this point. It may not be any better at all.

Ahhh...i see. Thanks. If it is going to be more off-road oriented, then how is it going to pass safety regulations (car compatibility crash, rollovers, etc.)??

I don't know. I guess they'll have to keep within the law and still make it as capable as possible given the limitations of the safety regulations.

Look at the Hummer H2 and H3. Those vehicles have high bumpers, decent clearance (especially the front end design) and still manage to meet safety regulations.

Nice pics of the limited! I am still trying to visualize what the sr5 and trail edition will look like without all the chrome, underbody spoilers, and running boards...hopefully a little more rugged! The limited looks pretty nice though, but you might as well get an RX350 if you want all that jazz with it.

I like what I see now, but someone please explain the mast antenna!!! I had so many problems with those things in my 3rd gen...it just seems like outdated technology. Is this what they meant by going back to its roots?

I does kinda look like a mix between the 3rd and 4th gens...but the front end and tail lights are definitely different.

That being said I like it a lot better in these pictures. That white one from earlier made it look horrible. These look a lot better. I wish they would put a diesel in this bad boy!

However they look a little too feminine, the 4th gens look a little fem stock but can look bad ass so who knows.. Hopefull everyone will sell there 4th gen and i can get one cheap in about a year.

The pics you brought are awesome! I have been searching and searching for other pics the whole last week, in all toyota websites (Japanese, etc.)
Now the car is almost (>80%) uncovered. Remains the back and interior pics. Hope someone will post them soon.

Interesting that the limited gets a power retractable antennae. It's probably better that way to reduce cost (vs. antennae elements on side rear windows). Also increases reception (?).

I'm still trying to figure out how Toyota can say that the 5th gen is "returning to it's roots" based upon these pictures. Other than the emblem on the C-pillar (looks like "Limited"), what else even hints of the older gen 4Runners? Oh yeah, the mast antenna. I get it now.

That might not be a power antenna, the mast may just not be screwed into the base on that particular picture. The reason I say this is because I don't think any manufacturer has offered a power antenna for years now. At least I can't think of one off the top of my head.
