If you go to Toyota's press site, you'll find this picture of the Limited center console:

You can see clearly that the limited has a locking center diff with low range. The SR5 and Trail Edition don't have that knob.

I'd be very happy to be proved wrong, but everything I've seen says that the SR5 and Trail Edition don't have a center diff.

i hear ya. it's hard to separate the wheat from the chaff at this early date... we likely won't know until we see it in person.

But if the SR5 and Trail Edition have this supposed automatic locking/unlocking Torsen center diff, with no manual locking control, how would you know that it has a Torsen or not? Crawl under the truck?

Agreed. I'm just wondering how I might be able to determine whether an SR5 or Trail Edition actually has a Torsen center diff. I suppose once the vehicles are available the owners manual will say whether the 4WD mode can be used on dry pavement. If so, then it likely has a Torsen center diff. If not...

The caption reads:
"All the off-road magic happens in the dual-range center differential."

I hope this is true i'm just crossing my fingers b/c for me driving up here in Alaska durring winters I would perfer a center diff.

How can you tell it is a center diff and not just a 2-speed transfer case?

I can't i'm just going off the captions. I'm just holding on to a glimmer of hope b/c right now Edmunds is the only place I see them saying the SR5 and Trail have a center diff. My guess is that Toyota is trying to say that the Limited is the only one that has a setting that can have you Lock the center diff permanently as oppose to having it work automatically.

Again we won't know for sure until we hear or read it directly from toyota. So as they say it... "Hope for the best... plan for the worst."

In Canada apparently, all the 2010 4Runners have what is shown in your picture. I really wanted the manual transfer case.

this mystery is also being discussed elsewhere: see here, for example. but no conclusion(s) as of yet...

i've written directly to toyota for clarification. but have yet to receive a response.

Dealers in hawaii have them. My friend works for toyota who just got back from texas for the release, and he got off the plane when to work and picked up a 4runner that was waiting for him to drive around for a bit.

Here is another glimmer of hope to hold on to. This forum member went to the Texas State Fair, took some pics, and had this to say:

"Some good news about the TE and SR5. The rep at the show said it does have a Torsen center differential. He said you can drive up to 62 mph on pavement in 4wd. The differential engages automatically. I hope this guy knows what he's talking about. When I first asked him, he didn't know the answer. He found me later and said he called to find out the correct answer."

I think I am seeing what people are complaining about with Toyota and the new 4runner. I built a Trail Edition with a Cali zip code and could not believe that I would be spending $40,000 with the options that I would like without NAV. The truth is that I prefer the exterior of the SR5 but with the guts of the TE (except that it does not have a center diff). Then I priced out 2009 Lexus GX's and it would be only $2,000 more but from what I understand with a better drive train setup and the only things I don't like about the GX is the rear swing & I don't have to have a V8 but I don't really care if it has one. After further research and building the 4runner online I feel it's only worth $33-35K. I hope Toyota makes the changes many have proposed here on T4r because it's really hard to justify paying $40k+ for a 4runner when for a couple thousand more and I can drive away with a Lexus with more capabilities. Finally I read somewhere that due to the currency exchange this is why they have made some decisions with the units built in Japan such as the 4runner; why does Toyota not build the 4runner in San Antonio, TX next to the Tacoma and Tundra to override the currency issues???????
