[Beach Runner]

Originally these were the standard silver color. I used aircaft stripper to remove the factory paint, primed with Duplicolor self-etching primer, and wetsanded the primer before appyling the first coat of base. I then sprayed three coats of Duplicolor graphite wheel paint and one layer of clearcoat. Fairly happy with results considering the fact that it was done with a rattle can. I'll post updated pictures once I have the tires mounted.

How many of us are using clearcoat? I have not had great results with the rattle can stuff, it always runs bubbles or other and I have to sand it off or strip it. Any tips? Or should I be spraying it on with an automotive spray rig instead and perhaps add some hardner?

@ Brian - Thanks man

@ xcmountain - I admit the clearcoat was a little more difficult to use than the base and I did have some build-up, but once it dried, I couldn't see it.

I used clear coat on all of my wheels. You need to be careful not to spray too much at one time, let each light coat dry for 2-3 minutes....do exactly as the can instructions say and you won't go wrong. It will run if you add too much to one place too soon after a coat before it.

Thanks guys, I might try my hand at an air sprayer (automotive spray) with clear, as I've had great results with my bumpers using automotive paint. I was thinking Audi TT flat grey/gloss (Aviator Grey IIRC).

Only in the Army would someone paint their wheels hulk green.

The paint job does look good though.

I had good results with Duplicolor clearcoat over Duplicolor Graphite Wheel Paint. One tip: if you paint with the tires off the wheels, let a good week go by before you try to fix any boo-boo's from mounting and balancing. You will just make a mess if you do it before. Ask me how I know.

This is a good point for the rattle can method, I also think it takes some time to truly cure.

On a side note I think I'll paint one of my sets of wheels the spray booth route this time around and see how they come out, deciding the color is the hardest part. At least that way I can speed the curing process by adjusting the paint,reducer,hardner mixture before time to paint.

I just went through this tedious process, so I figured I'd post pictures of my results.

FJZ80 Wheels. When purchased, one was painted black, all center caps were painted black, and there was some moderate to severe pitting on the wheel faces.

Anybody have a good source for new center caps? I need to replace 3 on my new Sequoia / Tundra wheels and preliminary online searches indicate $80-ish each.

RE the center caps, I'd check Ebay 1st, craigslist 2nd, and then the forum classifieds. You'll find some sooner or later. Post a WTB in the classifieds too. I was missing one, and that's how I found a replacement. There's lots of helpful people on this site.
