Oh No! -Totalled

Whats different about the Maple Leaf edition?

1) The sound of cranking it goes, "Eh, eh, eh, eh, eh."
2) And the mileage is probably in kilometers (km).
3) Since it's a limited and has the digital display; the A/C is probably in Celsius.

EDIT: Whoops, didn't notice the time-stamp or that this thread had a page 2. Well, an extension to your answer Nate, with a 2 month turnaround! :D

Replacement Runner. Just bought it a few days back. '98 Limited, locker, 145K. TB and WP done at 91K. Good records. Everything runs good thus far. Paid $5200. It's a Canadian import so I've ran across a few strange things.

hey ive got a 2000 limited :canada: i found out by the sticker on the bottom of my running boards. huh?

so is your rear tire flat? or just sinking into the concrete?

Any updates?

I been meaning to get to it. Don't have pics of the new truck but it looks exactly the same as my '96, minus the black trim. Probably gonna do that this fall. This one is a lot cleaner underneath. There's a maple leaf insignia on the door jamb sticker I recently noticed. I also learned that it has a remote starter on it. That was strange. Did the valve cover gaskets (and all other recommended pieces) last Saturday. Thanks to the trusty forum, I was able to complete the job and the truck started! Didn't even have any codes. Currently trying to diagnose a strange high pitch chirping noise. Started occurring about a week after installing lift. Definitely seems rotational, however, the vehicle has to be on the ground for it to happen. Also only occurs when the truck has been driven for a little while. I'll get some pics up when it doesn't have bird poop on it. Still need to get my panhard drop and sliders welded on. Here's the funeral march for the '96.
P.S. I have a slight 4Runner graveyard in my garage. I'm getting around to pics for a post in the classifieds. I gots a locker for sale!

Ok, dumb question... so forgive me, as I really have no clue. Do lockers have to be year (gen) specific?

okay that didn't help me :) I don't know what a ring gear is. I know...
So likely wouldn't fit a gen4?

Now that would be interesting to install the locker on your 4th gen, Terri. Do you have the v8 or v6? Pretty sure it's got the center diff lock, right? If the gear stuff matched that'd be pretty sweet. Might be a bit overkill -

im not sure on the front diff, but your rear is a 8" just like our 4runners. i have never heard of anyone retrofitting a 3rd gen elocker into a 4th gen though. but it should work. heck the whole rear axle might swap. but then you would have to make sure the gears are the same. in all honesty getting an ARB would probably be the safest and easiest way/bet. not trying to kill a sale, but just giving my .02. -come to think of it an FJC Elocker setup would be the best way to swap a locker into your 4runner, if you wanted to with a stock toyota locker, i have noticed that 4th gens and FJCs share a lot of the same rear suspension, so the entire housing ect might just be a direct swap.

Thanks for helping me understand all of this. I see lockers put into the gen4 Runners, so just assumed it was good to have. Shit, I don't know :)

Well, if ya want to pursue this, Terri, you know where to find me. Thanks, TheKid, for chiming in. I have the housing, harnesses and whole works. I don't know squat about 4th gen rear ends. I'm 90% positive I've got 4:10's in there. Dealer may be able to tell ya what gears you gots in your 4th gen or we can read the code on your door jamb. If you put that axle/locker in, there wouldn't be too many places you couldn't go. Except rivers. Never rivers.

what color is the paint on the pinion flange on the diff? id be very suprised if you had 4:10s. most limited elockers had 4:30s. while the diff would possibly work in Terri's runner, im pretty sure the harness and computer would not, it would have to be custom wired, but that should not be that hard to do.
Mytoy4 depending on how much he wants for the whole rear end, it might be worth it, but if your gear ratio is different, by the time you buy a new set of gears, or swap over your current gears(risky because of already established wear patters ect) then you would be close to the price of buying an ARB or similar locker. yeah lockers are great, but unless you are doing some serious off roading ect they are not necessary, and a trutrac(good aggressive limited slip) would be a better fit and cost about half what an ARB set up would

realistically this would probably be a better fit for someone who already had a 3rd gen and wanted to do the swap. again not to say it cant be done, i just have not read or heard of anyone doing a swap into 4th gen from a 3rd gen. so if your willing to be the guinea pig and put forth the foot work then by all means. but yeah it could prove challenging, but rewarding.

I agree, but thanks Andy :) I'd be way over my head trying to figure that out and I'm sure my husband would be quite irked ;)
