I know that 0w-20 is the recommended viscosity for our 4Runners here in the USA, but I would like to know what is recommended in Europe. I know that the usually recommend a higher viscosity oil for the cars over there compared to the exact same vehicle and engine here. I've been try to find out online but have had no luck, does anybody know how I could find out for sure?

They don't sell 4Runners in Europe. I think they do sell it's cousin, the Land Cruiser Prado.
That 0w-20 is a USA thing I think as Canucks said they recommend 5w-20 or 0w-20. Funny, because they usually get colder temps then us in winter and then to recommend a thicker oil?!
If it's good enough for the Canadiens ,it's good enough for me. I use 5w-20 Mobil 1 now too.

I did read in an article that one of the Ford Duratec engines that call for 5w-20 here in the states calls for 5w-40 or 0w-40 in Europe.
So I am guessing that 0w-20 is mainly a fuel economy thing here. I'm also curious as to what they expect us to use under the circumstances described in the manual where it says it may be better to use a higher viscosity oil when operated at high speeds or extreme loads. I'm guessing 5w-30 or 0w-30, but it doesn't say exactly what.

I'm guessing 5w-30 or 0w-30, but it doesn't say exactly what.I've been reading about the 0W-20 oils and have seen a lot of people say it is needed because of tighter tolerances, so I decided to find out what oil is recommended for our engine somewhere else. I e-mailed toyota of Australia and asked them what oil is recommended for the Prado with the 1GR-FE engine, so they sent me a couple of the pages out of the owners manual which showed 5W-30 as the lowest grade for extreme cold with the other options being 10W-30, 15W-40, all the way up to 20w-50. So, it makes me think that over here the main concern is fuel economy. Please don't flame me, I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with 0w-20 and 5w-20 but after finding this out I don't think I would be afraid to run a heavier oil if I was doing a considerable amount of towing. That being said there are probably a few hundred thousand cars running around with 0w-20 towing and getting ran hard in extreme conditions with no problems.
