One month out of warranty... 'and here we go'

G'day team,

The strangest thing happened on Thursday. I left the house just like any other day. I went to the truck and touched the door handle to unlock the door. I got in, put my foot on the brake pedal and pressed the 'Start-button'. There's always about a 2-3 second delay while she sequences the start. I can hear the main electrical relay pull-in. Now, I hear the audio system loading... but the engine is usually started before the stereo comes on, and no start! Now I turn it back off, put my foot back on the brake and push the start button again... same thing, no start. (*By no start I mean no 'cranking'*)... Just for clarification.

Then it occurred to me that I may need to do the whole thing completely over, including the 'disarming and unlocking' the driver door. Once I did that, she started right up/no more trouble; so I nixed it off as one of those flukey, improper 'sequence of loading' things that can happen wherever software/firmware is involved. Today, however, I had planned to take my niece out to lunch; told her that I would take her out to "Joe's crab shack" for some Queen crab legs for her 10'th birthday!

When I attempted to start it up though, same thing as thursday. The only sounds heard were the truck's electrical system engaging, and it's seatbelt chimes ringing... as if "all systems are ready to go"! I tried to "Boot-it" up again but that didn't work this time. I disconnected the battery for about a minute and then re-connected it, but no good. I attempted to start it about 7 or 8 more times and nothing. But then, after I started cursing and swearing at it, out loud :yell:, it did finally start :wtf: To me, it just felt like the engine had been 'immobilized', perhaps by the security system.

The truck has eight thousand, six hundred (8,600) miles on it and is totally stock; accept for the sub-woofer system which is really independent of all the other systems in the vehical e.g., all wiring straight to the battery and input signal comes right from a left/right front channel speaker tap. I read here that some have been successful "HOLDING" the key fob against the start button when it fails to start, but I just learned of this now so I didn't try that.

Any thoughts... cheers.

This sounds basic, but is your battery (truck) good?

I've had electronics in a Honda start acting funky when the battery started to go out. Yours is a 2012 so it should be good, stranger things have happened though. Worth a quick check.

Good luck.

Just turned 81 thousand miles, other than not liking to start at -20, it always does.

Aren't you a Yota tech? Shouldn't be too difficult to get some post warranty good-will.

Was your smart key in the same pocket as your "smart" phone? I've noticed my smart key not working when it was laying against my iPhone in my pocket.

Hi Sac'

Yes battery is good, had it tested a few weeks ago hoping to justify buying an 850 CCA agm battery that I had my eye on, but the battery passed the load test so... She cranks very well; even w/the lights on. This is a completely different problem.

Nah! I spend a little time over on the 120 and a few 'Audio' forums but that's it. My dealership's been 'WAITING' for me to expire cuz I've got a lil' over 8,000 miles on it and I've already had three oil changes done on their dime; they believe their getting screwed! Hahaha! Thx for both the replies!

Hi mkp,

Not exactly. I have a leash clip on my belt and keep my keys there. I also try to remember not to put my phone in my pocket either on my way to the car because, if I start it up and my phone's in my pocket, for some reason when I try to make a call, the prompter says: "There is no network signal available". Then, I have to either "restart" the vehical w/my phone in the cup holder, or "pair" entune with my phone again! So I will usually keep the phone in my hand so I don't forget. Weird?!

With only 8600 miles on it...... Why not just take it in for warranty??? And not cool cursing out loud infront of a ten year old :tsk:

One other thing that I forgot to mention. When the up-start failed, I noticed right after I pressed the start button, it started to flash (green) constantly... that sounds more 'ECM' (or security) related than an electrical issue.

I'm just outside of the warranty limit (2 years) as of 4/21/14, unless there is a tsb concerning this; which I doubt.

PS: Oh, and I hadn't picked her (my niece) up yet and this threatened to make me late; that's why I was cussin! lol

2 year warranty!! I never knew toyota had such a short warranty, are you sure its only 2 years? I thought Toyota's base warranty was 5 years, well thats what it is in Canada

Yes, the "powertrain" is covered for five years, but nothing else.

I thought Toyota warranty is 3/36. 3 years or 36,000 miles. I knew the powertrain warranty was a little longer too.

Shortly before April 2014, I started receiving emails/letters from Toyota's 'customer care' saying: "you have less than 30 days to extend your car care services, so please make an appointment to speak with one of our care specialists about some great options we've prepared for you blah, blah, blah..."

Wish I did have more time! :moping:

I believe this is for "Toyota Care" IE your free oil changes and tire rotations. That lasts something like 2 years or 24k miles. Warranty is completely separate.

rigtec, im pretty sure your still covered under warranty. just take it in, punch them in the gabber if theres any issues

Worth a shot! Plan on taking it in on monday, history log will reveal what the issue(s) are.

Hope you're right! Thanks for your help!
