Opinion on matching spare size

So, I have been running some Duratracs in 265/75/16 size for a year now. My spare is the original (circa 1999) on the steel rim. It is a 265/70/16 and obviously at this point pushing 14 years old. I have it in the stock location underneath in front of the tow hitch.

I've considered looking for a spare replacement in the same size as the Duratracs. Not sure it will matter much if they are slightly different in size if I ever need to use it?

Anyway, I ran across a guy on Craigslist selling a Cooper Discoverer STT Mud tire mounted on a Tacoma steelie. Size is 265/75/16. Should work just fine in the spare location. He wants $125 for it. Good deal, or no? He was running it as his spare too, so you can see the wheel has some rust and the tire is dirty, but brand new.

Nope.
Go to your local tire shop and buy a used one for ~$40.

If you have open diffs or selectable lockers then it can be different sizes to get you around until you get a replacement. If you have an auto locker then it needs to be the same size on both left and right side or you'll have issues with the locked diff.

If you intend on getting a swing out tire carrier or if you decide to throw your spare on your roof then I would see if he'd take $80 for it. Mud terrains just look cooler :thumb3:

I'd say getting a full size spare isnt something you need to have or can't use your rig with out. Wait for a killer deal, there out there.
