Opinion on price

I have been searching for a 4Runner and have come across this one on CL. Here is the very brief description from the seller.

"The 4Runner is 4WD, sr5, and it has the highlander package. It has not been in any accidents. Both o2 sensors were just replaced as well as the timing belt and water pump. It does have a slight start up issue that has only happened 4 times. The vehicle will turn over, but will not completely start until you hit the gas pedal. Thinking it was the o2 sensors, I replaced them, but it happened once again. It has 180,000 miles."

The seller has it listed for $5,500. It's hard to blue book because I can't pick the highlander package as an option. I still need to go see it and give it a thorough once over but wanted your opinion on a fair offer assuming all is well. Here is the only pic I have.

Doesn't seem like a bad price. See how many maintenance records the po has. Have you read the 3rd gen buyers guide?

i'd say the turn over could be a dirty MAF or the intake needs some cleaning..

looks solid otherwise!!!!

I have read through the buyers guide. I am going to call the seller today and make arrangements to go check it out. I am also going to call about this one today:

I would say go with the 1999. I bought mine for $5000, so you can definite haggle it down. But definitely look it over real well and take it to a mechanic as well. The check engine light came on as soon as I pulled out of the lot, so that was awesome. But everything is all good now.

Not sure if it is a stick or auto at this point. Why would you go with the 99 versus the 2000.

I personally have a 5speed 99 highlander and it's amazing. No pink milkshake, elockered, all the bonus features and whatnot. I've been told it's like a unicorn in the 4Runner world.

But the 2000 looks pretty good as well, and cheaper too, so that would be up to you.

Thanks for the info! I like the idea of no pink milkshake but I do commute around 30 miles each way so I don't really want a manual. All though I do have one now. You have peaked my interest with unicorn reference. If I do go with an automatic I plan on changing to an external tranny cooler and changing the radiator if need be.

I have an auto 99 Highlander and it has held up beautifully. I have towed a 3500# trailer from AZ to WA and back to AZ without any issue. I have 191,XXX miles on mine. I use it as a DD and to offroad. If it is an auto install the B&M 70264 tranny cooler on it and keep up on the maintenance and you will be all set.

Back in Dec 2011 I paid $8,800 with 133,XXX miles on it. Mine looks exactly like the one above but minus the running boards.

Your startup issue could be the injectors, too. Mine had that same issue when I first got it, hard to start and would run like sh*t the first 10 seconds. Even the Jiffy lube guy said it was clogged injectors when I took it in to get the tranny fluid changed, and wanted about $100 to clean them out. Said no, put some seafoam in the tank and STP fuel injector cleaner at the next fill up. Problem was 100% gone 400 miles later, hasn't come back either. :guitar3:

IMHO go with the 99 and offer 4500 and go from there.
