Option Packages on 10-13 TE

Alright, I'm starting my search for a 5th Gen. Specifically a 10 to 13 TE. I haven't found an answer to this: could you get the sliding cargo tray without KDSS? I'm trying to figure out how to spot a rig with KDSS by visual if at all possible, since a lot of listing don't specify, and I'm trying to find one with Nav but no KDSS. Any insight is appreciated.

My 10' TE has sliding tray w/0 kdss. The classic silver that I preferred too.

Do a google search on how to spot ones w/ kdss. Quite simple actually.

Dang. So no easy way to tell unless you can get under the truck, or have pictures on the listing. Poop.

I thought you could search the vin to know, but maybe I just read that on here. Replacing suspension actually seems easier than adding a sliding tray... just sayin'. Otherwise take a look here on adding the tray if you wanted it.

The nav option on either the LE or others really isn't great for those years, you could go aftermarket with a nice setup for not that much most likely. I only use mine occasionally, my phone is better.

...or you could turn the key to "ON" and look for the KDSS light.
Does the listing have pics of the instrument panel?

If you found the perfect rig...kdss is a deal killer? Honestly...after driving them back to back..kdss is awesome. I'm glad to have it.

Plus...it's a simple system so you could remove it as well.

Santa just took off from our roof so naturally I'm back here . Depending on the photos provided you may or may not be able to tell if a given trail edition has kdss. You may consider loooking at other new trails in the area. Toyota outfits vehicles for different regions. Here in northern California it's tough to find a trail without kdss, but in other regions almost no trails have kdss. Figure out where Toyota ships trails without kdss and you'll know where to look in the used market. In my experience if you take your time and are willing to walk away the right vehicle will find its way to you. Lastly, unless you have ambitions for long travel or over 3" of lift kdss is generally considered a compliment, but this has been covered numerous times and in much greater detail in other threads. Good luck!

I don't actually care about the tray. For some reason, I thought the tray and KDSS were packaged together. I'm just looking for a way to identify online since a lot of places don't list if it has it or not.

More than the nav, I want the backup camera.

True. IF there were any local. Last check, there were 2. I'm looking nation wide at the moment.

Well, no. I would prefer it without, just in case something did go wrong with it, it's a headache I don't want. I do 95% of my own maintenance, and that's something I wouldn't be able to repair on my own. And I was under the impression that it is NOT a simple thing to remove.

It's two hydraulic cylinders and a few valves. I don't see the complication in removing it however dealing with the vsc might be the complication.

I'm sure there will be an easy solution to do so as the system ages. However, I personally wouldn't sweat it as again, it's a simple system so even if it has issues, hydraulic lines and cyclinders and valves aren't a mystery to deal with.

Merry Christmas and good luck!

The only major complications removing it is that the frame and rear axle are not setup to run a regular swaybar setup. You would have to do cutting welding and tapping in several places. The light on the dash is also annoying but some have taken the bezel out and put black tape over it. Also a few hard parts (like front LCAs) are unique on KDSS trucks and can be difficult to find used and can take months of lead time if ordered via Toyota. If I was buying a used truck that is already 5+ years old I would personally avoid KDSS. New or with low miles.. It would be a toss up depending on my intended use. It's pretty beneficial for the typical owner.

I still think the best looking 5th gen 4runner ever made are the 10-13 Trails in silver or that light blue. If only they would have made it in pearl white.

Back when I was looking for one (never could find one in good enough shape at a fair price)... they all had the sliding rear cargo tray, but that may have just been what I encountered...

One thing I did was call places and ask the salesman to text me a picture of the front swaybar and LCA if they did not know if it was KDSS or not. It's super easy to tell by just glancing if you know what to look for. Or have them turn on the ignition and look for the KDSS light.

Taking everything off wouldn't scare me, it's replacing it with something else that would give fits I think.

And thanks! It's going to be going down the road this spring. Can't put the kiddo on the back with Momma and me, so I'm going to divert funds into a nicer DD, and probably get a convertible for the wife in a few years. I'll miss it, but not as much as spending time with our daughter.

And now we get to where someone confirms what I had thought, and also shares the same opinion on a used vehicle as me. I would argue that the 3rd Gens were the best looking overall, with the 10-13 TE's a close second; I feel different on color, but the point stands either way. I could swing a new one, but I can't get past the fish gills on the 14+.

That's probably what I'll end up having to do. Realistically I'm probably 12 months out, so there'll likely be more on the market by then. So far all I've seen with the tray had KDSS, so that's where my question started. Thanks for the input fella's.

Some additional things to be aware of.

- All 10-13 TEs delivered in the gulf coast region. Texas, Florida, Louisiana... won't have KDSS. I think that changed to some extent after 2013.

Another important thing to know about the used 5th gens is the airbag recall. All 5th gens have a passenger airbag that is under a recall program, but it depends on what climate it has been in and for how long. So gulf coast 10-11 and soon to be 12. Are recalled now, but there is no remedy at this time. So technically you should not have a passenger in the truck. It really sucks and something a prospective buyer should be aware of. Hoping Toyota gets parts soon. If the truck comes from a Coastal state where it is warm... it will most likely be recalled already if it is a 10-12. Others have a few more years. I would expect this would make the resale value drop significantly.. and this may also be a great bargaining chip....

https://techinfo.toyota.com/techInf...echinfo/html/prelogin/docs/cp/g1pg1rtofaq.pdf

It is a bit of a confusing read... but all 5th gens seem to have the problematic passenger airbags. It's even possible 2017 models will have it (but doubtful). We are all just waiting and they will replace them, just unclear on how long it will take. The real risk seems low though. But it still seems like a tough sell if you have a truck that is recalled with no safe passenger airbag... Might be a real buyers market for those. And if you ***** enough... Toyota will give you a rental until a fix is available. Just a thought.

i actually still kinda like mine; 7" screen is great. the newer Entune units are smaller, and i find they're not really better — just crappy in different ways.

i'm biased, but agree here with the sole addition of Salsa Red; rare as Shoreline Blue and still a real head-turner.

these are great suggestions, @Cree.

i second this. a lifted 3rd Gen, specifically. and building on that design, i've always felt that Toyota absolutely nailed it with the 10-13 Trail. it really feels like a modern update of the 3rd Gen aesthetic. why they threw all that good work out the window with that mug on the 14+ i'll never understand...

I have been in the same boat for the past at least couple of years… yes, that how long it took me to locate the good deal on 2010-2013 TE in silver… and I was also looking for one without KDSS but with NAV for the reasons you stated;

From my knowledge:
1) I do not believe you will find 10-13 TE with NAV and no KDSS… maybe they exist, but I have not heard of one;
2) all 2010-13 TE will have sliding tray (which I also wanted because it makes floor flat when second row of seats are folded);

Before finding my 2013 TE I have also tried to force myself into liking the 2014 body style… and had 2016 TEP (without KDSS) for week as a loner… that was the week I realized I wouldn’t never be happy with 5th gen 4Runner road manners without KDSS… (I also did not like the vinyl seats..)

Now, I have a huge grin on my face every time I am getting behind the wheel of my 2013 TE with KDSS… yes, it is still BOF SUV, but the road manners are awesome! And I also know that I have slight advantage off road vs. stock trucks without KDSS and that is hard to beat!

Considering the reliability of KDSS as well as complexity of modern vehicles (including 4Runner), there are plenty of other things that can fail a lot more often than KDSS and will be very expensive to repair… this is just part of modern car owning experience… just the way it is;

So as far as possible future KDSS failure… I will take my chances… life is too short not to enjoy it!

Same here - bought my classic silver 2013 TE w/ KDSS in 2014, even though I tried to like the 2014+...
