Are you expecting a trail? Where does it say man tran?

The Test: On a high-alpine dirt track in Colorado, the 4Runner was surprisingly impressive. Unlike many of today's car-like sport utility vehicles, the Trail's stiff suspension and more than ample 9.6 inches of ground clearance, plus a manually tuned off-road suspension, made us feel like we could tackle any obstacle (sand, mud, rock, or snow) in our path. The trade-off for all that rough-riding capability is a gas-guzzling 270-horsepower V-6 mated to a five-speed manual transmission. That combination made for somewhat sluggish acceleration on the freeway.
The Verdict: A pure off-road performer that seats five, plus dogs. $38,645; 17 mpg city/

Gas guzzling? I guess the writers of today's articles forget the days when every vehicle had a small block v8 and got 10 mpg! I think a serious 4x4 suv that gets 22+ highway is the opposite of gas guzzling. I don't what it would take to not call it gas guzzling.
Don't forget they have a hybrid jetta on the list. And a mini.
I guess in that group of extreme adventure vehicles the 4runner might be considered gas guzzling?
I stopped paying attention to that magazine years ago. You can tell that advertisers rule the articles and lists. Saw a list on there of the Top 10 or 20 Adventure towns and laughed my ass off. Any research reveals that the list is bogus. Hell, even my current residence is listed in the top 20 and I can tell you that it does NOT belong on that list. Men's Journal is the same way. I very much miss National Geographic Adventure Magazine. The trips were realistic, and most of the lists were not advertiser driven. Too bad NG killed it off. I loved the mag so much that I managed to collect the whole series. On a side note, I have developed a healthy addiction to Overland Journal lately.

What kind of adventure are you going to have in a Jetta Hybrid? A trip to the dealer for warranty work?
It seems like they compiled that list just by reading online reviews, and have never driven any of those vehicles. And seriously, why are compact sedans "Adventure Vehicles"

Oh, I suppose that driving on a forest road or over 10 inches of snow is a real adventure for a small car. In that sort of situations 4Runner will not get you any feeling of "adventure" : )
