Outside mirror lights

Does anyone know what the long, slender light on each outside mirror is for? I'm talking about the ones on the leading edge, not the ones on the bottom. They appear to be some kind of turn signal indicator, but mine do not light when using the signal.

Ok, maybe they only work when the headlights are on? Now that it's dark, they seem to be working.

Yes, they're turn signals, and they work regardless of the headlights on or off.

They are designed to be seen from the side, and from the rear, and not directly face-on from the front.

Turn signals? Damn, the salesman told me they were laser beams that would send laser and telepathic signals to people to move out of my way.

Yeah, I'm a moron. Was following someone and they called me to tell me that my mirror signals weren't working. Instead of actually checking with my own 2 eyes, I looked in the manual and then posted here. Next day I actually checked them in the daylight and noticed that they are only visible from the side.
