oversized pics/threads

I'm relatively new to the forum and, hopefully, my T4R will be delivered this week.

Each time I visit I find threads that are 'oversized'. If I reduce the size to see the width of the thread then the print becomes too small to read. If I leave it 'normal size' then the text and pics overflow the monitor.

This doesn't happen on other forums I frequent.

Is there some kind of setting or technological solution or is this just something I'm going to have to accept?

I agree.

This has been a problem since I first came here in 2009. (This is my second incarnation (actually 3rd, but whose counting T4Rs).

It has been asked to fix this several times, but nothing has ever been done.

It doesn't take a real genius to limit the size of the pics uploaded, let alone for someone to reduce the size with their cellphone or cam pics before they take the pic or they upload to the server.

Blowing out the margins makes it difficult to read the forum. Having a wide monitor does not help much either.

I was going to request this too; however, it's like beating a dead horse, so......

Assuming the forum has full BBCode support you could potentially replace [IMG ] code with one that limits the size. Its been awhile since I've worked with vBulletin but I believe there is a server-side plugin that can insert resize how external images are displayed. It does take some work to setup however.

Upload size and URL links

There isn't any info on this forum that I can find about how to post photos. If the photos are sized smaller before posting them they will fit without stretching the page. But I haven't figured out what size is optimum.
I can't figure out how to link from a gallery like Photobucket, Flicker or Smugmug, but it is clearly an option in the upload window you see when you try to upload images.
The forum could use a page on how to upload images.

That would be nice if others would set their cams to the same setting. I do the same thing before I take a pic and upload to a forum.

Adding the pics as an attachment also works and does not blow the margins out for this site.

Pixel size versus image size

That's the pixel size. The other variable is pixels per inch (ppi). The two parameters determine print or image size. FYI, 800x600 = 480,000 pixels or 480 mb. At 200 ppi it's also a 4'x3" image.

You must be shooting an Olympus or you have your format set to 4:3 if you get a 800x600 image. I shot with an Olympus for about 8 years. Nikon and Canon are 3:2 format. It's the proportions of the sensor.

You can resize photos in Windows with the simple photo editor. Resize and then set the total pixel count with the file size selection option ( I forget what Windows calls it). Don't ask me about Mac. I don't know Mac. I use Photoshop and the resizing method is different.

Photobucket has a resizing function. I use 800x600 pixels as well.

I resize my photos from what ever my phone shoots them at, it's a 12mp camera that I set to highest quality.

If you use Imgur you can check the "edit" box when you do a mass upload. Then it will take you picture by picture and allow you to crop, resize, etc. I always just say "maintain aspect ratio" then change the image height to 900 pixels. Assuming most people have a 1080p or higher resolution monitor these days, the image will mostly fill the screen, but not be absurdly wide or too small.

I have no problem adjusting the size of pics or adjust the cam, however, ideally, the administrator should limit the pixel size of the pics or code a method so the margins don't blow out.

But it's too much trouble to resize the pics or adjust my cam....

I'll just shoot at the highest resolution and upload to the forum and to hell with the complainers....

Ive found some chrome extensions that help:

iZoom and "Drag to Resize Image"

Definitely not a permanent solution, but the oversized-straight-from-phone images have recently been peeving me.
