Apparently it's legal in Texas to defend property with deadly force?

What happens if the killing doesn't quite go as planned? Examples: shooter misses and kills neighbor who is sitting in his own house watching tv; shooter misses and bullet is deflected and injures neighbor; shooter is using a high caliber weapon, kills the thief, bullet continues and kills neighbor; killer was at a bar earlier, got tipsy, and "thought" the thief had a gun; etc.

There just seem to be so many things that can go horrifically wrong.

Yeah,it needs to be per capita,my bad as it looks like DC is one of the worst and has been for a while and for a such a small area,at least Texas is almost the size of a good chunk of Europe.

Speaking from personal recent experience of my car being stolen in front of my eyes and within seconds from having my kid being in the truck, the degenerates having zero empathy for ruining our Christmas, threatening my family's safety and causing me financial hardship and on going inconvenience for dealing with cops, insurance, towe yard and body shop. Not to mention that I can't sleep the same any more.

I would have to think very hard about not blasting those waste if oxygen bas****s.
It is a tough call, I pray about it all the time, making the right decision.



On another note, how did the police recover your nav? I had 3 cameras stolen that night and thought it was a lost cause.

My description when it was stolen and the data on it. I had to come down to the police station and identify it. When they started it up, it had my home setting on it.

It is legal in Texas to defend your property with deadly force. There are consequences if you are not a good shot. Those are the things you have to consider.

There is only one thing I dislike more than a liar and that's a thief. If I caught someone breaking into my car I would not hesitate to shoot first and ask questions later. Most homes in my area are rear entry garages. Not too many people standing around in the alleys late at night. That is one of many considerations. At one time it was not legal to shoot them if they were fleeing, but not anymore. Even if it was, in the infamous words of Ron "Tater Salad" White, shoot them in the @ss until they turn around.

Here's a funny story...A GPS unit has been stolen from our friend's car when they were doing grocery shopping (yeah, car was left unlocked) and it took them couple days to figure out that GPS is missing. They even did not bother to report missing GPS to authorities. However, couple month later, their evening was interrupted by police at their door steps. Long story short...police busted someone during traffic stop (I believe because of drugs), took the GPS from a windshield, pressed "Go Home" button and followed direction
That's how you can recover your GPS.

To my knowledge, there was a series of car break-in's in my area and somehow they caught the kids that were doing it.

I asked the Sheriff who was doing the thefts when I was collecting my nav, but they could not release that information. I got back my nav, but not the other stuff.

In the end, they got caught, I got some of my stuff back, and hopefully the kids learned a lesson and no one died in the process.

NOTE to DannyLlama: Sorry to hear about your ordeal. That is obviously way worse than what happened to me. Glad everyone is OK.

One side comment about the Glenn Law... so what if the guys that were stealing the 4Runner decided to shoot back? I just can't see the sense in shooting at people for material objects and risking anyone getting killed on either side. I get the argument of defending ones family, friends, etc, but that was not the case in this situation.

I'm no lawyer, but with laws like these that's what the justice-system is for. I think it would all come down to if their actions reflect what a reasonable person would do, etc.

Same thing for the much-maligned "stand your ground" laws. Despite what the press wants you to believe....Just because you have a right to defend yourself, doesn't free you from the scrutiny of your peers. Your actions will be judged against whether or not a reasonable person would feel the same in your situation and did you act appropriately. Concealed-carry classes take a lot of time to focus on this kind of thing.

Yeah, it ended up being misfiled scientific reasearch cadaver heads returning to US to be destroyed. But I did see a story where Chicago is already on track to out pace last year's murder rate. I guess they didn't have much to look forward to since it isn't an election year. No free obama phones or anything.

If the crime was deemed SERIOUS enough, I say they go to the gas chamber. Society (in the state of TX) has deemed the defense of property as a serious enough crime to warrant killing. I am OK with that.
